The procedure

What are porcelain veneers?

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of dental porcelain (typically 0.3-0.7mm thick) bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers correct the appearance of stained, chipped, slightly misaligned, or worn-down teeth without the more invasive preparation a crown requires. The bond to natural tooth enamel is permanent and the veneer functions like the surface of a natural tooth.

Veneers are the workhorse of cosmetic dentistry. A typical "smile makeover" is 8 to 10 veneers across the upper smile zone (the teeth visible when you smile). Some cases extend to 16-20 veneers for both arches. Less common is single-tooth veneer work, which is usually for a specific chip or discolouration.

Modern veneers come in three main material families: E.max (lithium disilicate), the current premium standard for natural translucency and strength; feldspathic porcelain, the traditional craft-fabricated option, prized for very natural-looking results; and zirconia, harder and more opaque, used when strength matters more than translucency.

Pricing

Veneer prices across the five SmileJet cities

Prices are per single tooth and vary by material: E.max premium tier sits at the upper end, traditional feldspathic at the mid-range, basic porcelain at the lower end. A typical 10-veneer smile makeover ranges from US$2,800 to US$5,200 across the five cities. See clinic-level pricing in the section below.

City Price range (per tooth, USD) Single-trip length

Da Nang offers the lowest per-tooth pricing. City-to-city differences are less than 15%: choose on recovery preference, not price alone. Prices reflect verified partner clinic ranges; lower-tier clinics may quote less but are not included in SmileJet listings. Individual quotes confirmed in writing before travel.

Trip protocol

The veneer trip timeline

Veneers close in one 5-7 day trip across all five SmileJet cities. Unlike implants, veneers do not require healing time between visits, so the entire smile makeover is completed before you fly home.

Day 1 Arrival

Land in your chosen city, rest, hydrate.

Day 2 Consultation, photography, smile design

Detailed photos, shade matching, smile design walkthrough. Some clinics offer digital smile design: a software preview of the proposed smile before any tooth preparation.

Day 3 Tooth preparation

Light shaving of the front surface of each tooth (typically 0.3-0.7mm). Detailed impressions taken. Temporary acrylic veneers placed for the duration of fabrication.

Days 4-5 Lab fabrication

In-house dental lab fabricates the veneers. Most top Vietnamese partner clinics have on-site labs that turn this around in 2-3 days. Light recovery for you in the meantime.

Day 6 Try-in

Veneers tried in unbonded for fit, shade, and shape verification. Adjustments made if needed.

Day 7 Cementation

Final bonding with permanent dental cement. The veneers become a permanent part of the teeth at this point. You leave the clinic with the final smile.

Faster protocols (3-day single-visit veneers using same-day chairside CAD/CAM milling) are available at some partner clinics for smaller cases. Most patients prefer the 5-7 day protocol for the try-in step that allows fine adjustments before permanent bonding.

Materials

Veneer material options

E.max (lithium disilicate): $420-520 per tooth

The current premium veneer material. High translucency mimicking natural enamel, strong enough for full-smile cases, colour stability over decades. The default choice for top-tier smile makeovers. Top SmileJet partner clinics use Ivoclar Vivadent E.max blocks, the same ceramic system used at leading Australian cosmetic practices.

Feldspathic porcelain: $380-480 per tooth

Traditional layered porcelain, hand-built by ceramists. Most natural-looking when done well; requires high lab craft. Slightly more fragile than E.max but matched in aesthetic potential.

Composite veneers: $120-250 per tooth

Direct chair-side composite resin built up on the tooth. Faster (single visit), cheaper, but less durable and prone to staining. Suited for budget cases or temporary work; not the SmileJet partner default for full smile makeovers.

Zirconia veneers

Harder and more opaque than E.max or feldspathic porcelain. Used when strength matters more than translucency, for example on heavily worn teeth or where extra durability is the priority over maximum natural light transmission.

Preparation and shade

Preparation levels and shade selection

No-prep and minimal-prep veneers

No-prep veneers require no enamel removal at all: a very thin layer of porcelain (0.2-0.3mm) is bonded directly to the tooth surface. Suitable only for teeth that are slightly smaller than ideal, heavily discoloured, or with sufficient space for the veneer thickness without looking bulky. Not appropriate for most smile makeover cases. Minimal-prep veneers remove 0.3-0.5mm of enamel, preserving more tooth structure than traditional prep while still achieving full smile-zone coverage.

Traditional preparation

Standard veneer preparation removes 0.5-0.7mm of enamel from the front and sometimes the edge of each tooth. This is the most common approach at Vietnamese partner clinics and allows the veneer to sit flush with the gum margin without bulging. The preparation is irreversible: once enamel is removed, the tooth needs to be covered by a veneer or crown for life. Top-tier ceramists plan the preparation depth based on the final shade target, minimising removal while achieving the aesthetic goal.

Shade selection: the most important decision

Veneer shade is permanent at the point of cementation. The ceramist matches your desired shade using the VITA classical shade guide or digital spectrophotometer. Bright white shades (B1, Bleach White) look dramatic in photos but can appear unnatural in daylight at conversational distance. Most cosmetic dentists recommend A2 or B2 as the natural ceiling for a convincing result. Your digital smile design preview shows the proposed shade before any preparation, allowing you to adjust before committing.

How many veneers: 4, 6, 8, or 10

The number of veneers determines the smile width. Four veneers cover the central and lateral incisors on the upper arch, visible in a close-lipped or small smile. Six veneers extend to the canines. Eight veneers reach the first premolars, covering the full social smile zone. Ten veneers extend further. Vietnamese partner clinics typically recommend eight to ten upper veneers for a full smile makeover: fewer than eight leaves obvious shade discontinuity at the edge of the smile zone.

Patient FAQ

Common veneer questions

How much do veneers cost in Vietnam compared to Australia?
E.max porcelain veneers in Vietnam cost US$420-520 per tooth (A$643-795) at top SmileJet partner clinics, compared to A$1,500-2,400 per tooth at a Sydney cosmetic dentist: a saving of approximately 68-73% per veneer. A 10-veneer smile makeover costs A$6,430-7,650 in Vietnam versus A$15,000-24,000 in Sydney. The single-trip schedule (5-10 days, no second trip required) means the travel cost is absorbed in a single visit.
Can veneers be done in a single trip to Vietnam?
Yes. Unlike implant procedures, veneers do not require osseointegration time. The standard schedule is: Day 1 consultation and digital smile design; Day 2 tooth preparation and temporaries; Days 3-5 lab fabrication; Day 6 try-in and bonding; Day 7 final adjustments. Most patients fly home on Day 7 or Day 8. The entire treatment is complete in one trip, making veneers one of the most cost-effective dental tourism procedures on a per-trip basis.
Are the veneer materials in Vietnam the same as in Australia?
Yes. Top SmileJet partner clinics use Ivoclar Vivadent E.max blocks (lithium disilicate), the same ceramic system used at leading Australian cosmetic practices. The material is milled or pressed in the same global specification. Crown and veneer quality depends on ceramist skill and bonding protocol rather than geography: SmileJet audits both at partner clinics. Lab turnaround at HCMC and Da Nang top-tier labs is 3-4 days, comparable to premium Australian metropolitan labs.
What is the candidacy requirement for veneers?
Ideal veneer candidates have: structurally sound teeth with sufficient enamel for preparation; healthy gums and no active gum disease; no untreated decay at the planned veneer sites; and no severe bruxism (teeth grinding) without a plan for a night guard. Patients with very thin enamel, severe crowding, or deep bite issues may be recommended alternative treatments. Your treating Vietnamese dentist assesses candidacy at the digital smile design consultation and will advise if a different approach better suits your case.
Will my teeth be ground down?
A small amount of enamel is removed from the front of each tooth: typically 0.3-0.7mm. This is necessary so the veneer fits flush with the tooth surface rather than bulging. Modern minimal-prep veneers reduce this to 0.3-0.5mm. The preparation is irreversible: once teeth are prepared, you commit to having veneers maintained for life.
How long do veneers last?
E.max and high-quality feldspathic veneers typically last 12-20 years with proper care. Composite veneers last 4-7 years. Replacement at the end of the lifespan is straightforward: old veneers are removed, new ones bonded to the same prepared teeth.
Can I get veneers on just one tooth?
Yes, single-tooth veneers are common for chips or discolouration. Matching the shade and shape exactly to neighbouring teeth is harder than full smile makeovers but achievable at top-tier partner clinics. Photography and shade matching are critical.
Will they look fake?
Modern E.max and feldspathic veneers are difficult to distinguish from natural teeth at conversational distance. The risks of looking fake come from over-whitening (too bright), over-bulking (too prominent), or uniform shape (each tooth identical rather than naturally varied). Top-tier ceramists hand-finish each veneer to avoid this.
Do I need a night guard?
If you grind your teeth at night (bruxism), yes: a custom night guard is strongly recommended to protect the veneers from cracking. Top-tier partner clinics include a custom night guard with smile makeover packages, or fit one as a separate US$80-150 add-on.
