Hoi An scores the highest patient satisfaction for post-dental recovery of any city in the SmileJet Vietnam network. The car-free Ancient Town, silk-lantern evenings, and quiet Thu Bon riverside make healing here nothing like healing at home.
First 48 hours post-procedure
Recovery in the Ancient Town — what to do
Ancient Town evening walks
The Hoi An Ancient Town is car-free, flat, and entirely walkable. Evening lantern light is the most famous aspect — soft, warm, no harsh stimulation. Gentle walking through the old streets, stopping at wood-carved shop fronts and river viewpoints, is exactly the right pace for day 1–2 post-procedure. You will not feel like you are recovering.
Thu Bon riverside cafés
The riverside café scene along the Thu Bon River is perfectly calibrated for quiet recovery time. Wooden platforms over the water, Vietnamese egg coffee and fruit smoothies, and river-boat traffic to watch. Most riversides cafés are accessible by a short Ancient Town walk. The pace here actively reduces stress — which is documented to support faster healing.
Lantern-making workshops
Hoi An is famous for its silk lanterns. Multiple workshops offer hands-on lantern-making sessions — 2 hours of seated, focused activity that requires no physical exertion. Good for a day 2–3 occupation when you want gentle engagement. The lanterns make good carry-on luggage souvenirs.
An Bang Beach
An Bang Beach is 3km from the Ancient Town — 10 minutes by bicycle or Grab. A quieter, less commercial beach than Da Nang's My Khe. Loungers and beach restaurants are available. Swimming is possible from day 4–5 for single-implant patients (confirm with your treating clinician). The beach is ideal for passive recovery: sitting, reading, gentle wading.
Cycling the paddy field route
Hoi An is the best cycling city in Vietnam. Flat terrain, well-signed bicycle routes through paddy fields to An Bang Beach and surrounding villages. Bike hire is A$2–4 per day. The cycling pace here is slow and unhurried — there is no traffic urgency. Even patients who do not normally cycle find the flat rural routes manageable.
My Son Sanctuary half-day
My Son is a UNESCO-listed Cham temple complex 40km from Hoi An — 1.5-hour drive, organised day tours depart from the Ancient Town. Mostly walkable at your own pace between temple groups. The vegetation and architecture are extraordinary. A full visit takes 3–4 hours. Not suitable for day 1–2 due to the drive and walking distance.
Hoi An soft food guide
Central Vietnamese cuisine from Hoi An and the surrounding area includes several excellent healing-appropriate dishes.

Recovery FAQ — Hoi An
How long is the Grab back to Hoi An after a procedure at the Da Nang clinic?
Approximately 30–35 minutes depending on traffic. Morning appointments typically have a faster return. Your Da Nang clinic will provide the clinic address in Vietnamese for your Grab driver. SmileJet's pre-trip briefing includes this address and the recommended route.
Is it safe to do the Ancient Town evening walk on day 1 after an implant procedure?
Yes, for most patients. Gentle, flat walking at a slow pace is fine from day 1. The Ancient Town is car-free and unhurried. Avoid anything strenuous — vigorous activity increases blood flow to the surgical site and can extend swelling. A 20–30 minute lantern-lit stroll is entirely appropriate.
Can I swim at An Bang Beach during recovery?
Confirm with your Da Nang treating clinician, but general guidance is: no swimming for 48 hours post-procedure, and no swimming for 5–7 days post-implant surgery. An Bang Beach is beautiful for passive beach days — sunbathing and gentle wading — even without swimming.
Recovery tips by treatment type — Hoi An
Different treatments have different recovery profiles. Here is what to expect and how Hoi An Ancient Town supports each type of recovery.
Veneers (preparation and temporaries)
After veneer preparation, sensitivity through the temporaries is normal for 24–48 hours. Avoid biting directly into hard foods with the temporary restorations in place. Normal Ancient Town activity — walking, eating in restaurants, café visits — is fine from the same afternoon. The fabrication days (Days 3–5) are unrestricted: beach, tailors, cooking classes, sightseeing all work.
Dental implants
Post-implant surgery swelling peaks around Day 2 and typically resolves by Day 4. Cold compress application for the first 24–48 hours, soft food for 2–3 months of osseointegration. Hoi An is excellent for the post-surgery stay — pho, congee, steamed rice, and coconut water are everywhere. Gentle Ancient Town walks are fine from Day 2; more active sightseeing from Day 4–5.
Root canal treatment
Post root-canal tenderness is normal for 24–48 hours — managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Avoid chewing directly on the treated tooth until the permanent crown is placed. No activity restrictions after root canal — the Ancient Town evening walk on Day 1 post-treatment is perfectly appropriate.
Wisdom tooth removal
Blood clot protection is the priority in the first 24 hours: no straws, no smoking, nothing that creates suction. After 24 hours, gentle rinsing is fine. Soft food for 3–5 days depending on extraction complexity. The Hoi An soft-food café culture — morning congee, afternoon smoothies, evening pho — is ideal. Gentle walking from Day 2; An Bang Beach from Day 4–5.
