Quick summary
Getting to Phu Quoc: what every dental patient should know
- Phu Quoc is Vietnam's only visa-free zone: every passport holder is admitted for 30 days on arrival at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC), with no visa application, no e-visa portal, and no fee of any kind.
- There are no direct international flights from Australia. The standard routings are via Ho Chi Minh City (SYD/MEL-SGN, then a 45-minute SGN-PQC domestic hop) or via Singapore (SIN-PQC direct, 2h30m).
- Direct flights into PQC operate from Ho Chi Minh City (45 min), Singapore (2h10m), Kuala Lumpur (1h45m), and Hanoi (2h20m).
- PQC airport sits about 8 km from the Duong Dong clinic zone (10-20 min) and 10 km from the Long Beach resort area (15-25 min). Grab and metered taxis serve the airport.
- If your entire trip stays on Phu Quoc island, no mainland visa is needed. If you clear customs on the Vietnamese mainland (e.g. an overnight in HCMC), a standard Vietnam e-visa (US$25) is required for the mainland portion.
- SmileJet includes a full flight, transfer, and clinic-schedule logistics brief with every quote at no cost to patients, with first appointments scheduled on day 2, not arrival day.
Entry rules
Visa-free entry to Phu Quoc, how it works
Phu Quoc is designated as a special economic zone with visa-free access for all nationalities. When you land at PQC, you present your passport at the immigration counter and are admitted for 30 days, with no prior visa, no e-visa application, and no fee of any kind.
This applies to every passport holder in the world, including Australian, New Zealand, British, American, Canadian, European, and all others. There are no exceptions.
One condition to note: If you leave Phu Quoc island and travel to mainland Vietnam (Hanoi, HCMC, Da Nang), you will need a standard Vietnam e-visa (US$25) for the mainland portion. If your entire trip stays on Phu Quoc, the typical dental trip, no mainland visa is needed.
Flights
Flights to Phu Quoc (PQC)
Direct services into PQC operate from several Asian hubs. From Australia, New Zealand, and the UK the standard approach is a single connection through Ho Chi Minh City or Singapore.
Flight times approximate. Book independently, SmileJet does not arrange flights.
The airport
Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC)
PQC is a compact airport that clears faster than the Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi gateways, and it sits close to both the clinic zone and the resort areas.
Airport transfers into town
Grab works well on Phu Quoc. Order inside the terminal before exiting. Set the destination to your resort name or "Long Beach Phu Quoc". The fare is fixed and shown upfront, and most resort zones are well covered.
Available outside arrivals. Mai Linh is the reliable fleet on Phu Quoc. Make sure the meter is running. Flat rates to resort zones are also common, with A$7-10 to Long Beach being reasonable.
Most international resort properties on Phu Quoc offer airport transfers. Book 24+ hours in advance via your resort. The driver holds a name sign in arrivals.
Travel day
Travel-day logistics for dental patients
A few decisions on the way in make the difference between a smooth arrival and a stressful one. Here is what SmileJet briefs every patient on before they fly.
Arrival day: no treatment is scheduled
SmileJet designs itineraries so your first appointment is on day 2, not day 1. Arrival day is for transit, check-in, acclimatising, and rest. Attempting treatment on the same day as a long-haul flight from Australia or New Zealand increases stress and compromises consent quality. Use arrival day to pick up a SIM card (Viettel in the arrivals hall, ~100,000 VND for a 7-day data SIM), check in to your resort, and order soft food.
Connecting through HCMC without clearing customs
Most flights from Australia connect through Ho Chi Minh City (SGN). If your onward PQC flight is on the same booking and you remain airside (do not clear SGN customs), you enter Vietnam at Phu Quoc under the SEZ visa-free rule and no mainland visa is needed. If you clear customs in SGN (an overnight stay before PQC), a Vietnam e-visa (US$25) is required for the mainland portion.
Singapore direct route considerations
Singapore Airlines and Scoot both serve SIN-PQC. The Singapore routing adds one extra connection stop (SIN) but avoids HCMC congestion and operates direct into Phu Quoc. From London, Middle East hubs (Doha, Dubai) into Singapore, then SIN-PQC direct, is a viable and comfortable routing. Perth patients often find Singapore the shorter option.
Day-before appointment checklist
The evening before your first clinic appointment: confirm the appointment time via WhatsApp with SmileJet, arrange your Grab transfer to the clinic (save the clinic address in both English and Vietnamese), review your treatment plan summary, avoid alcohol (which affects clotting), and eat a normal meal. For implant surgery appointments, confirm whether pre-surgical antibiotics were prescribed and whether you should fast beforehand.
