January to March: the sweet spot
January through March is the best window for a Hoi An dental trip. Temperatures sit at a comfortable 20–24°C, humidity is low, and the sky is reliably clear. The Ancient Town is at its most walkable and photogenic — the kind of recovery environment that makes the trip feel worthwhile beyond the dental work itself.
The one caveat in this window is Tet, Vietnam's Lunar New Year, which falls in late January or early February depending on the lunar calendar. Clinics close for 5–10 days around Tet, and staff travel to be with family. Check the exact Tet date for the year you are planning to travel and build a two-week buffer either side. If your dates do not overlap with Tet, January to March is an excellent time to visit.
April to August: warm and workable
April and May are the final months of the dry season before heat becomes a factor. Temperatures climb from a pleasant 26–30°C in April to 30–34°C by June. The humidity increases through May and into the summer months, but all SmileJet-verified Hoi An partner clinics are fully air-conditioned — treatment itself is conducted in a comfortable environment regardless of outdoor conditions.
Peak tourist season runs from May through August. The Ancient Town becomes busier, accommodation prices rise, and the Hoi An Lantern Festival (the 14th of each lunar month) attracts large crowds. None of this affects clinic access, but it does affect the recovery experience — the quiet, contemplative pace that makes Hoi An well-suited for post-treatment days is somewhat diminished in high summer. For patients who are less concerned with the cultural experience, summer months work perfectly well from a treatment logistics perspective.
September to December: the wet season
September marks the beginning of Hoi An's wet season. Rainfall increases steadily through September and peaks in October and November, which is the flood season. The Thu Bon River, which flows beside the Ancient Town, overflows in most years during this period. Flooding can range from a manageable few centimetres to knee-deep water in the historic streets — the severity varies significantly year to year and even week to week.
Clinics located in higher-ground areas of Hoi An — away from the Ancient Town core — remain operational through most flood events. Patients staying in well-positioned accommodation with ground-floor clearance can generally continue treatment with minor schedule adjustments. December marks the beginning of the dry-out period and conditions improve steadily through the month, making late December increasingly reliable.
Tet (Lunar New Year): avoid for dental
Tet is the most important holiday in the Vietnamese calendar, and it has a significant operational impact on dental clinics. Most clinics close for a minimum of five days and frequently up to ten, beginning two or three days before the Tet date itself. Support staff travel to their home regions, supply chains pause, and laboratory services are suspended.
Tet typically falls in late January or early February — the exact date shifts each year with the lunar calendar. For 2027, Tet falls on 29 January. Check the date for your target year and avoid booking treatment within a two-week window of the Tet date. This applies to all of Vietnam, not just Hoi An.
Climate and recovery
Hoi An's pace is one of the reasons it suits dental tourism well. The Ancient Town is compact, mostly flat, and pleasantly walkable for post-treatment recovery days — a significant contrast to the noise and traffic of Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City. This recovery quality holds year-round; the wet season adds logistical complexity but does not remove it.
For patients undergoing implant placement or surgical extractions, the guidance is the same regardless of season: soft diet, minimal exertion, no swimming. These restrictions are easier to observe in a town with good cafes, a slow canal-side atmosphere, and accessible tailor shops than in a city with higher stimulation. The season affects logistics; the fundamental recovery suitability of Hoi An does not change.
