Phu Quoc Visa & Entry
Phu Quoc SEZ visa-free rules explained
Phu Quoc is a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) under Vietnamese law, which grants all foreign passport holders 30 days visa-free when entering directly. This page explains the rules clearly: who qualifies, the conditions, and what happens with mainland Vietnam connections.
Quick summary
Phu Quoc's visa-free rules at a glance
- Phu Quoc is a Vietnamese Special Economic Zone (SEZ) that grants 30 days visa-free entry to all foreign passport holders who arrive directly on the island.
- The exemption is universal: it applies to all nationalities, including Australian, New Zealand, British, American, Canadian, and all EU passports, with no approved-nationality list.
- To qualify you must enter Phu Quoc directly at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) or by sea, without first clearing customs on the Vietnamese mainland.
- The 30-day visa-free stay is not extendable in Vietnam; for longer stays the standard Vietnam e-visa (US$25, 90 days, multiple entry) can be applied for in advance.
- If you clear customs in Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) or Hanoi first, that mainland stay requires a Vietnam e-visa, but your subsequent Phu Quoc entry remains visa-free.
- SmileJet designs dental itineraries that maximise the visa-free convenience and include itinerary-specific visa guidance in the trip brief.
Core rules
The six core SEZ visa rules
These are the rules that govern visa-free entry to Phu Quoc under its Special Economic Zone status.
All passports qualify
The Phu Quoc visa exemption applies to all foreign passport holders regardless of nationality. This includes Australian, New Zealand, British, Canadian, American, and all EU passports. There is no approved-nationality list, it is universal.
30 days, not extendable
The visa-free stay is 30 days from date of entry. You cannot extend or convert this to a longer-stay visa while on the island. If you need more than 30 days, you must depart and re-enter (subject to immigration discretion).
Direct island entry only
The exemption applies when you enter Phu Quoc directly at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) or by sea. If you transit through mainland Vietnam and clear customs there, you are on the Vietnamese mainland and the mainland e-visa requirement applies. Airside transit through SGN (without clearing customs) does not trigger this.
Single entry per visit
The 30-day visa-free access is for a single continuous stay on the island. If you leave Phu Quoc and re-enter, you begin a new 30-day period, subject to immigration officer discretion. Re-entry immediately after a day trip to the mainland is generally not an issue but is at the officer's discretion.
No application required
There is no visa application, online form, fee, or pre-approval required. You present your passport at Phu Quoc Airport immigration and receive the 30-day entry stamp. Nothing is needed in advance.
Return ticket may be requested
Immigration officers may ask to see evidence of onward travel. Having a return or onward ticket is standard practice. Book your departure flight before travelling, not as a formality, but because the island is a dental trip, not open-ended travel.
Mainland routing
Phu Quoc visa-free and mainland Vietnam
Whether the visa-free rule applies depends on whether you clear customs on the mainland. The three common scenarios:
Routing via SGN airside (no customs)
Many flights to Phu Quoc route through Ho Chi Minh City (SGN). If you remain airside (do not clear customs in SGN) and continue to PQC as a connecting flight on the same booking, you do not enter mainland Vietnam. On arrival at PQC, you clear customs there and receive the 30-day SEZ stamp. This is the standard routing for most international arrivals.
Overnight in SGN before domestic flight to PQC
If your itinerary includes clearing customs in SGN, for example arriving late and spending a night in a mainland hotel before flying to PQC the next morning, you are entering mainland Vietnam. A Vietnam e-visa (US$25) is required for this mainland stay. Your subsequent entry into Phu Quoc would still be visa-free, but the mainland night requires the e-visa. Most dental trip itineraries are designed to avoid this.
Day trip from Phu Quoc to HCMC
If you fly from Phu Quoc to HCMC during your trip (for example, to complete a treatment stage), you are entering mainland Vietnam. An e-visa is required for that mainland portion. Upon returning to Phu Quoc, you may enter visa-free again (new 30-day period), but re-entry is subject to immigration officer discretion. SmileJet's combined PQC and mainland itineraries account for this and include e-visa guidance where needed.
For your dental trip
SEZ rules and what they mean for your dental trip
The visa-free status is more than a convenience. It removes a logistical step that mainland Vietnam dental destinations cannot.
Why the SEZ advantage matters vs Da Nang and HCMC
Patients travelling to mainland Vietnam dental destinations (Da Nang, HCMC, Hanoi) must apply for an e-visa in advance (US$25, 3 business days processing). Phu Quoc removes this step entirely. For patients from countries with tight processing windows, or those booking shorter lead-time trips, the SEZ arrangement removes a logistical barrier that affects mainland Vietnam destinations.
Two-trip implant protocol and the SEZ
Dental implant protocols require a return visit 3-6 months after surgery for the final crown fitting. Under the SEZ arrangement, both trips are independently visa-free. Your second trip to Phu Quoc requires no application, no fee, and no advance planning beyond booking your flights. This contrasts with mainland Vietnam, where the e-visa must be re-applied for (or a multiple-entry visa used) for the return trip.
SEZ rules if you miss your PQC connection
If a missed connection forces you to clear customs on the Vietnamese mainland (e.g. overnight in HCMC because of a cancelled flight), you are in Vietnam proper and need a Vietnam e-visa for that mainland stay. Travel insurance with trip disruption cover is relevant here. Upon onward arrival into Phu Quoc, the SEZ visa-free provision applies from that point for a new 30-day period.
Combining the SEZ with a mainland Vietnam e-visa
The Phu Quoc SEZ visa-free entry and the standard Vietnam e-visa operate independently. Holding an e-visa does not affect or limit your Phu Quoc SEZ access. Patients combining island and mainland itineraries apply for the e-visa for the mainland portions, while Phu Quoc entry remains visa-free regardless. SmileJet provides itinerary-specific visa guidance in the trip brief.
