Da Nang Recovery

Recovery in Da Nang

By SmileJet Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

Da Nang is the only city in the SmileJet Vietnam network where you can walk to the beach from your hotel room. My Khe Beach is 20km of white sand — the ideal passive recovery environment from day 3 onwards.

First 48 hours post-procedure

No smoking or alcohol — impairs healing and increases infection risk
No straw use — suction can dislodge blood clots at implant sites
Soft foods only for first 24h
No swimming in the sea for first 72h — risk of oral infection from salt water
No vigorous exercise — keep heart rate calm
Sunscreen on lips and perioral area if spending time on the beach in the first 48h

Recovery activities by day

Beach walking (not swimming)

From day 1 Very low

My Khe Beach is flat, firm sand and entirely walkable with zero physical demand. Early morning or late afternoon walks are ideal for day 1–2 post-op: fresh air, low stimulation, natural light. Sit under an umbrella and read. Do not swim or allow salt water near your mouth for the first 72 hours.

Café and restaurant culture

From day 1 Very low

Da Nang's beachside café scene is excellent — slower-paced than HCMC, with abundant soft-food options. Cháo (rice congee), silken tofu dishes, and fresh fruit smoothies are everywhere. The Han Market area has good soft Vietnamese breakfast options within short Grab distance from beach hotels.

Marble Mountains (Ngũ Hành Sơn)

From day 2–3 Low to moderate

Five limestone hills 8km south of the city, each containing Buddhist sanctuaries, caves, and temples. The main Thuy Son peak has an elevator for low-mobility access. Cave sanctuaries and carved chambers are accessible with minimal climbing. A full visit takes 3–4 hours at a slow pace — ideal for day 2–3 when you want activity but not exertion.

Swimming and beach activities

From day 4–5 Moderate

After the initial healing window, swimming in the sea is generally appropriate for single-implant patients. Full-arch patients should confirm with their treating clinician. My Khe Beach has lifeguards and is considered safe for swimming. Water temperature averages 26–28°C — warmer than most Australians are used to.

Ba Na Hills / Golden Bridge

From day 3 Low (cable car access)

The cable car to Ba Na Hills at 1,500m elevation is one of Vietnam's most photographed attractions — including the famous Golden Bridge held by stone hands. The cable car ride takes 20 minutes each way with zero physical effort. Temperature at the summit is significantly cooler than the coast — bring a light layer. A 6–7 hour day trip by Grab taxi.

Hội An day trip

From day 3 Low

Hoi An Ancient Town is 30 minutes south by Grab — a UNESCO car-free lantern town that is one of the most pleasant walking environments in Vietnam. Ideal for a half-day or full-day from Da Nang. The old town is flat, walkable, and has abundant soft-food options. See the Hoi An page for what to do there.

Da Nang soft food guide

Safe from day 1

Cháo (rice congee)
The foundational healing food. Available at every market and street stall. Order plain for first 24h.
Mì Quảng broth
Da Nang's signature noodle soup — order the broth only for first 2 days. Full bowl from day 3.
Fresh fruit smoothies
Tropical fruit blended smooth. Available everywhere on the beach strip. Drink from cup — no straws.
Silken tofu with ginger syrup
Tàu hũ nước đường — a traditional Vietnamese street dessert, perfectly soft and soothing.
Yoghurt and soft dairy
Available at Circle K, FamilyMart, and most convenience stores on the beach strip.

Avoid for first 5–7 days

Bánh mì (baguette)
Hard crust — too much bite force for fresh implant sites.
Mì Quảng crispy rice crackers
These are served alongside the noodle soup and are extremely hard. Remove them.
Grilled seafood (tôm nướng, mực nướng)
Beach BBQ is everywhere in Da Nang — skip it for the first week. Chewy texture is too demanding.
Spicy dishes
Chilli irritates fresh gum tissue. Da Nang food is generally milder than Hue but watch for chilli condiments.
Very cold drinks
Extreme temperature sensitivity on fresh crown margins. Room temperature or slightly cool only.

Day-by-day recovery guide for Da Nang dental patients

Recovery after dental treatment varies by procedure type — a veneer bonding appointment has virtually no recovery period, while a full-arch surgical implant case requires careful management for the first 5-7 days. The guide below covers the most common treatment scenarios at Da Nang clinics, with activity guidance calibrated to each recovery phase. Treatment is typically scheduled for Day 2 of your trip, with Day 1 reserved for arrival, acclimatisation, and rest.

Day 1 (arrival)

No appointment. Rest, acclimatise, walk the beachfront. Message your SmileJet coordinator to confirm arrival and review Day 2 appointment logistics. Eat normally. Explore the My Khe Beach promenade and try local food — a straightforward Day 1 sets up a better treatment experience on Day 2.

Day 2 (consultation and assessment)

First clinical appointment: consultation, X-rays, clinical examination. For most cases this is a diagnostic session — no procedures performed. The exception is whitening-first cases (whitening begins on Day 2) and single-tooth emergencies. Post-consultation, the afternoon is free. Most patients walk or explore after their morning appointment.

Day 3 (first procedure day)

Surgery, extraction, implant placement, gum contouring, or tooth preparation depending on your treatment. For surgical procedures: rest at the hotel the afternoon of Day 3. Soft foods. Ice pack as directed. For cosmetic-only work (whitening, bonding): back to normal activities within the hour of leaving the clinic. Beach walking is appropriate from Day 3 evening for all procedure types except open-surgery cases.

Days 4-5 (early recovery or fabrication window)

For surgical cases: swelling peaks at 48-72 hours. Most patients rate discomfort as 2-4 out of 10 with paracetamol. Gentle My Khe Beach walking is appropriate. No swimming. Marble Mountains day trip is comfortable for most patients on Day 4-5 (elevator access, no strenuous climbing). For cosmetic/crown cases: these are your laboratory fabrication days — genuinely free. Hoi An day trip is the standard recommendation.

Days 6-7 (fitting and finalisation)

Return to clinic for crown, veneer, or bridge fitting. Most patients report these appointments as comfortable — fitting and cementation is painless. Post-fitting activity is unrestricted for cosmetic work. For surgical patients who had extraction or implant on Day 3: suture check and clearance appointment on Day 6-7. Most are cleared for swimming and normal diet.

Departure day review

Final clinic appointment before departure. Your Da Nang clinician provides a written discharge summary including treatment details, materials used, and home care instructions for your dentist. For implant patients: osseointegration timeline, when to schedule Trip 2, and signs to watch for during the healing interval. For cosmetic patients: shade records, veneer care instructions, and the recommended home maintenance products.

Eating well during Da Nang dental recovery: soft foods in Vietnam

One of the genuine advantages of recovering in Da Nang is the quality and variety of soft Vietnamese food available at every price point. Vietnamese cuisine is naturally well-suited to post-dental recovery: rice congee, silken tofu, noodle broths, and steamed dishes are staples of the local diet rather than afterthoughts. The following dishes are available throughout Da Nang and are consistently appropriate for the first 5-7 days of post-surgical or post-cosmetic recovery.

Cháo gà (chicken rice congee)

The universal recovery food of Vietnam. Cháo is a slow-cooked rice porridge with a silky, completely soft texture — essentially impossible to chew against, which is exactly what you want after implant or extraction surgery. Available at markets, street stalls, and dedicated cháo restaurants across Da Nang from 6am. Order plain (cháo trắng) for the first 24 hours, with chicken (cháo gà) from Day 2.

Mì Quảng broth

Da Nang's signature noodle dish. The full bowl includes turmeric-yellow noodles, herbs, and crispy rice crackers — but during recovery, order the broth and noodles only, and skip the crackers entirely. The broth is deeply flavoured and the noodles are soft enough for Day 2 onwards. Served in dedicated Mì Quảng restaurants throughout the Han Market area and on the beach strip.

Tàu hũ nước đường (silken tofu dessert)

One of the most overlooked recovery foods for dental patients. Silken tofu in warm ginger syrup is available at hawker stalls and markets throughout Da Nang. It requires no chewing whatsoever — smooth, soothing, and mildly sweet. Served warm or at room temperature (avoid very cold for the first few days). An ideal late-afternoon snack on recovery days when the dental soreness is most noticeable.

Bánh cuốn (steamed rice rolls)

Thin steamed rice rolls filled with minced pork and wood-ear mushrooms. The texture is completely soft — steaming produces a delicate, easily managed roll with no crust or resistance. Available at Bánh cuốn vendors near the Han Market and in the beachside residential streets. Appropriate from Day 2 for most procedure types.

Tropical fruit smoothies

Available at every beachside café and stall along Vo Nguyen Giap Street. Mango, dragon fruit, avocado, and soursop smoothies are the standard. Drink from the cup — not through a straw (straw suction can dislodge blood clots at surgical sites). High in natural sugars and calories, which supports healing nutrition when solid food is difficult.

Phở and bún bò Huế broth

The broth component of any Vietnamese noodle soup is appropriate from Day 1. The noodles themselves are appropriate from Day 2-3 for most patients. Phở is widely available in Da Nang, and bún bò Huế (a spicier Hue-style beef soup) is also common — note that bún bò Huế is significantly spicier than phở, which can irritate fresh gum tissue. Choose phở for the first two days if sensitivity is a concern.

Where to find soft food in Da Nang

Chợ Hàn (Han Market) in the city centre has dedicated sections for cháo, bánh cuốn, and soft noodle vendors from 6am. Vo Nguyen Giap Street (the main My Khe Beach boulevard) has smoothie bars and beachside restaurants with soft-food-friendly menus. Circle K and FamilyMart convenience stores on the beach strip stock yoghurt, soft dairy products, and packaged congee for late-night recovery snacks. The Con Market (Chợ Cồn) in Hai Chau district is an excellent source of freshly made tofu desserts in the morning.

Activities during recovery: what you can do at My Khe Beach

The key insight about Da Nang recovery is that the beach environment removes the confinement that makes post-surgical recovery difficult at home. At home, recovery means being in your house. In Da Nang, recovery means being on a warm beach. This distinction is why patients consistently report that the subjective experience of recovering in Da Nang is significantly better than recovering from the same procedure at home — even when the clinical recovery timeline is identical.

Beach walking and sitting (Day 1 onwards)

My Khe Beach is flat and requires zero exertion for leisurely walking or simply sitting. Early morning walks (6-8am) when the beach is quiet and the temperature is cooler are ideal for Day 1-3 post-surgery. The sea air, natural light, and open space are considerably better for mood and wellbeing than a hotel room. Bring a beach towel and SPF. Avoid direct sun on any perioral swelling.

Beachside cafes and restaurants (Day 1 onwards)

The Vo Nguyen Giap beachfront strip has a strong café culture — not the loud beach clubs of other Asian destinations, but quieter café-restaurants with ocean views, good coffee, and soft-food menus. Spending a morning at a My Khe beachside café with a book or a laptop is a low-effort, pleasant recovery option from Day 1.

Marble Mountains visit (Day 2-3)

The five marble hills 8km south of Da Nang are accessed primarily by elevator on the main Thuy Son peak. Cave sanctuaries, carved Buddhist temples, and viewpoints over Da Nang's coastline are the main features. The low physical demand (elevator access for most areas, flat cave paths) makes this appropriate from Day 2-3 for extraction and implant patients. Allow 3-4 hours.

Hoi An day trip (Day 3-4)

30 minutes south by Grab. Hoi An Ancient Town is entirely flat, entirely walkable, and entirely car-free in the old town core. The pace is much slower than Da Nang. Tailors, lantern shops, silk galleries, and excellent soft-food restaurants line the streets. The Thu Bon River walking path at dusk, when the lanterns are lit, is one of the most visually distinctive experiences in Vietnam. Day 4 Hoi An is the most common single experience reported by SmileJet Da Nang patients in post-trip feedback.

Swimming at My Khe (Day 4-5 for most procedures)

Swimming is appropriate from Day 4-5 for most extraction, implant, and cosmetic patients — confirm with your Da Nang clinician at the Day 3-4 review. My Khe has lifeguards from approximately 7am-6pm. Water temperature is 26-28°C. The waves are gentle compared to Australian surf beaches. Avoid submerging the head completely for the first 5-7 days after any oral surgery.

Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge (Day 3 onwards)

The cable car ascent to Ba Na Hills at 1,400m is physically effortless and the summit is markedly cooler than Da Nang's coast. The Golden Bridge and the French Village precinct are the main attractions. A full day trip by Grab or private car from Da Nang. Appropriate from Day 3 for most patients — the low physical exertion (cable car all the way) makes it viable earlier than other more demanding activities.
