First-time SGN arrivals: what to expect

Immigration at SGN can be busy β€” allow 30–60 minutes if arriving on a busy international flight. E-visa holders use the standard immigration lanes. Baggage claim is efficient; customs for dental-related items (prescription medications, bite guards) is routine β€” no special declaration needed for personal medical supplies.

After clearing customs, Grab (Vietnam's Uber equivalent) is the best option to District 1. Order inside the terminal before exiting β€” prices are fixed and shown before you confirm. Ignore taxi touts in the arrivals hall; official meters are fine but Grab is cheaper and has no language barrier.

Getting from SGN to your accommodation

Grab (recommended)

Best option
~A$4–7 to District 1
25–40 min

Download the Grab app before arriving. Set pickup at the "Arrivals β€” International Terminal" pin. Fare is fixed and shown upfront. Drivers track your location. GrabCar is private (sedan); GrabBike is scooter (cheap, not recommended with luggage). No cash needed β€” pay in-app or cash.

Official metered taxi

Reliable fallback
~A$6–10 to District 1
25–45 min

Mai Linh (green) and Vinasun (white) are the two reliable licensed fleets. Fare is metered. Make sure the driver starts the meter β€” if they won't, use a different cab. Avoid unmarked taxis or drivers who approach you in arrivals.

Hotel transfer (pre-arranged)

Zero hassle
~A$12–20
30–45 min

Most 3-star+ hotels in District 1 offer airport pickup. Arrange via your hotel before arrival. Driver holds a name sign in arrivals. More expensive than Grab but useful on first arrival, jet-lagged, at night, or with heavy luggage.

Where to stay for dental appointments

Most convenient

District 1 (BαΊΏn NghΓ©)

Walking distance from Parkway Dental and Elite Dental Vietnam. The city's main hotel, cafΓ©, and restaurant hub. Noisy and busy β€” bring earplugs. Grab is cheap for the 10-minute ride to clinics in other districts.

Best for: First-timers, short trips (5–7 days)
Quieter, well-located

District 3

Residential district bordering District 1. 10 minutes to District 1 clinics by Grab. More local restaurants, lower hotel prices. Good for patients who want a calmer environment between appointments.

Best for: Repeat visitors, anxiety-sensitive patients
Expat residential hub

District 7 (PhΓΊ Mα»Ή HΖ°ng)

The planned southern district β€” international supermarkets, quiet streets, international school zone. Walking distance to Worldwide Dental & Cosmetic. 30–40 minutes to District 1 by Grab. Best for patients staying 10+ days.

Best for: Longer stays, families, Worldwide Dental patients

Vietnam e-visa for HCMC visitors

Who needs it
Most nationalities
Australian, NZ, UK, US, Canadian, EU passports all use the e-visa system
Cost
US$25
Single entry. No agency fee needed β€” apply directly at xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn
Duration
90 days
Single or multiple entry available. More than enough for dental trips
Processing time
3 business days
Apply at least 5 days before departure. Expedited same-day processing available unofficially via agents.

Apply at the official Vietnam Immigration Portal. You will need: a valid passport (6+ months remaining), a passport photo (digital), and a credit/debit card for the US$25 fee. The e-visa PDF is emailed β€” print it or save it on your phone. Present it at the immigration counter on arrival.

Arrival day β€” what to do before your first appointment

Most SmileJet dental patients schedule their first clinic appointment on Day 2. Here is how to use Day 1 (arrival day) well.

Get your SIM card at SGN

Pick up a Viettel or Mobifone SIM at the arrivals hall counters β€” 7-day data SIM for around 100,000 VND (A$6). This gives you data for Grab (your primary transport throughout the trip), WhatsApp with SmileJet coordinators, and Google Maps. Do this before leaving the terminal.

Download the Grab app before leaving home

Grab is Vietnam's Uber β€” used for all clinic-to-accommodation transport throughout your stay. Download and register before you depart Australia; set up payment with your Visa or Mastercard. Having it ready before arrival avoids the SIM-card-first scramble.

Check in, rest, and orient locally

HCMC is lively but straightforward. District 1 and District 3 hotels are close to restaurants and cafΓ©s. A 30-minute evening walk to locate nearby food and a convenience store is useful. Avoid midday heat if you are fatigued from the flight.

Confirm your appointment via WhatsApp

SmileJet coordinators will message you on arrival day to confirm Day 2 appointment time and clinic address. Confirm your Grab pickup timing β€” allow 15–25 minutes buffer to Thao Dien clinics during morning rush hour (7–9am).

Currency for spending money

The clinic accepts your card or SGD/USD/AUD. For restaurants and street food, withdraw VND from an ATM β€” 2–3 million VND (A$120–180) covers a week of eating well. Travelex cards and international Visa/Mastercards work at most HCMC ATMs.

No dental procedure on Day 1

Unless you have a very specific same-day consultation pre-arranged with SmileJet, Day 1 is travel and rest only. Your first clinical appointment is Day 2. SmileJet does not schedule surgical appointments on Day 1.
