Phu Quoc Visa Rules
Phu Quoc: 30-day visa-free entry for every passport
Phu Quoc is Vietnam's designated special economic zone, the only location in Vietnam where all passport holders enter without a visa. No application. No fee. No e-visa portal. Present your passport at PQC airport and receive a 30-day admission stamp.
Quick summary
Phu Quoc visa rules: everything you need before you fly
- Phu Quoc Island offers 30-day visa-free entry to all passport holders, with no application, no fee, and no e-visa portal, provided you arrive directly to the island.
- You receive a 30-day admission stamp at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) simply by presenting your passport at the immigration counter.
- The visa exemption is granted by Phu Quoc's status as a Vietnamese Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and covers Phu Quoc island only.
- Travelling to mainland Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, or by sea to Ha Tien) requires a standard Vietnam e-visa, which costs US$25 and is applied for online.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date, and an onward or return ticket is standard practice to show.
- Most dental trips run 7 to 10 days and complete well within the 30-day window; SmileJet provides a written quote before you fly and free coordination with vetted Phu Quoc clinics.
The basics
How the Phu Quoc visa-free zone works
Unlike mainland Vietnam, which requires most visitors to obtain an e-visa, Phu Quoc Island has a special visa exemption policy. Here is the legal basis and exactly what happens at the airport.
The legal basis
Phu Quoc was designated a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) under Vietnamese government decree. The SEZ status grants visa-free access to all international visitors, regardless of nationality, for stays of up to 30 days. This applies at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) only. If you enter mainland Vietnam first (SGN, HAN, DAD), you need a standard Vietnam visa for that mainland portion.
What this means at PQC airport
Land at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC), follow signs to International Arrivals / Immigration, present your passport at the counter, and declare your intended stay (up to 30 days). You receive a 30-day admission stamp with no paperwork required beyond your passport, then collect baggage and proceed to the arrivals hall.
The mainland travel condition: If you leave Phu Quoc and travel to mainland Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, or any other mainland destination), you will need a standard Vietnam visa for that mainland visit. The visa-free arrangement covers Phu Quoc island only.
For most dental trips, your entire stay is on Phu Quoc (treatment plus recovery), so no mainland visa is needed. If you plan to extend your trip with a mainland segment, apply for a Vietnam e-visa (US$25, evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn) before departure.
At the airport
Your arrival at PQC, step by step
No visa paperwork, no portal, no queue for an e-visa stamp. The whole process is your passport and a 30-day admission stamp.
Eligibility
Who qualifies: all passport holders
The Phu Quoc visa-free arrangement covers every nationality without exception. The following passports are all confirmed visa-free at PQC:
This list is illustrative; the visa-free arrangement covers all nationalities. Verify current rules at the official Vietnamese immigration portal before travel.
Comparison
Phu Quoc vs mainland Vietnam: visa comparison
Phu Quoc is the only part of Vietnam that needs no visa at all. The mainland requires a standard e-visa for most visitors.
| Phu Quoc (PQC) | Mainland Vietnam (SGN/HAN/DAD) | |
|---|---|---|
| Visa required | No | Yes (e-visa) |
| Application process | None | Online (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn) |
| Fee | Free | US$25 |
| Processing time | Immediate (at counter) | 3 business days |
| Maximum stay | 30 days | 90 days (e-visa) |
| Entry type | Single or multiple (30-day limit) | Single or multiple entry |
For your trip
What this means for a dental trip
Four common scenarios and exactly what the visa rules mean for each.
Standard Phu Quoc dental trip (7-10 days)
Fly into PQC, treat and recover on the island, and fly home direct. No visa needed, not even US$25. The entire trip is frictionless from an entry-paperwork perspective.
Combining Phu Quoc with mainland Vietnam
If you add Hanoi or HCMC before or after your island stay, you need a Vietnam e-visa for the mainland portion. Apply online 5+ days before departure at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn.
Two-trip implant protocol (surgery + final bridge)
Each Phu Quoc visit is independently visa-free. Your return trip 3 to 6 months later also requires no visa application; just land at PQC with your passport.
Extended recovery over 30 days
If your stay will exceed 30 days, you will need a standard Vietnam visa, or the visa-free arrangement will not cover the full stay. For dental trips, 30 days is more than sufficient.

Practical details
Practical visa details for dental trip planning
The fine print that matters: passport validity, return tickets, overstays, and date tracking.
Passport validity requirement
Vietnamese immigration requires a minimum 6 months passport validity beyond your intended departure date from Phu Quoc. If your passport expires within 6 months of your planned return date, renew before travelling. This rule applies to all nationalities under the SEZ visa-free arrangement and is enforced at PQC airport on arrival.
Return ticket standard practice
Immigration officers at PQC may ask to see evidence of onward travel as standard practice. Book your return or onward flight before arrival and have the confirmation accessible on your phone. Most dental trip patients have return flights booked as part of the SmileJet trip brief, so this is rarely an issue in practice.
Overstay consequences
Remaining in Phu Quoc beyond the 30-day visa-free period is an overstay under Vietnamese immigration law. Overstays carry fines at departure and may affect future entry to Vietnam. Dental treatments planned by SmileJet are designed to be completed well within the 30-day window. If treatment delays extend your stay near the 30-day limit, contact SmileJet immediately for guidance.
Entry stamp and date tracking
Your 30-day count begins from the date on the entry stamp placed in your passport at PQC immigration. Count the days carefully if your trip approaches 25 to 28 days. For two-trip implant protocols, your return trip starts a new 30-day visa-free period from the date of second entry. Each entry is independent.
