What is gum contouring?
Gum contouring, also called gingival sculpting or gingivoplasty, is a procedure that reshapes the gum line to improve the proportion and symmetry of the smile. Too much gum tissue above the teeth creates a "gummy smile" that makes teeth appear short; uneven gum levels make an otherwise healthy smile look asymmetric; dark or patchy gum pigmentation creates a contrast with the teeth that many patients find distracting.
Laser gum contouring addresses all of these concerns precisely. A diode laser removes excess soft tissue with minimal bleeding because the laser seals blood vessels as it cuts. The entire reshaping session typically takes 45 to 90 minutes under local anaesthetic, and most patients return to light activity the following day. There is no suturing required in pure soft-tissue cases.
Crown lengthening goes one step further. Where the gum contouring goal requires exposing more of the tooth's clinical crown, the underlying bone may also be lightly reshaped. This is a periodontist-level procedure with a slightly longer recovery (five to seven days) but a permanent result, because bone does not regenerate in the same way soft tissue can.

Active gum disease (periodontitis) must be treated before elective reshaping. Gummy smile caused by skeletal jaw position may need orthognathic surgery. Medication-induced gum overgrowth: address the underlying cause first. Insufficient attached gingiva may complicate soft-tissue removal. Unrealistic expectation of full smile transformation from contouring alone.
Diode laser vs Er:YAG
Almost all SmileJet-listed clinics in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City use a diode laser (typically 810nm or 940nm wavelength) for soft-tissue gum contouring. Diode lasers are well-suited to this procedure: they are absorbed selectively by the pigmented gum tissue, cause minimal bleeding by sealing vessels simultaneously, and require no sutures in most soft-tissue cases.
A smaller number of clinics, predominantly in HCMC and Hanoi, use an Er:YAG laser. The Er:YAG wavelength is absorbed by water rather than pigment, making it effective on both soft and hard tissue. This is the preferred laser for crown lengthening cases that involve bone removal, and for depigmentation where deeper penetration is useful. Er:YAG cases tend to have slightly more post-operative sensitivity than diode cases but similar overall recovery timelines.
In either case, healing is substantially faster than scalpel-based contouring: typically two to three days versus five to seven days for an equivalent scalpel procedure. All SmileJet-listed clinics offering gum contouring have laser-certified clinicians performing the procedure.
Recovery and aftercare
Laser gum contouring heals faster than scalpel-based reshaping. Most patients return to light activity within a day or two.
Mild ache managed with paracetamol or ibuprofen. Some light oozing is normal: rinse gently with diluted chlorhexidine as instructed. Soft foods only. Avoid hot drinks for the first 24 hours.
Most patients feel comfortable from day three. Gum tissue may appear slightly swollen and lighter in colour as it heals; this is normal. Continue soft foods and gentle oral hygiene.
Crown lengthening cases involving bone recontouring need five to seven days before the area feels fully settled. Light tourism is comfortable; vigorous exercise should wait until the end of this window.
By day seven to ten, most patients return to a normal diet and full oral hygiene routine. The final gum position becomes apparent over the following two to four weeks as post-procedure swelling fully resolves.
After depigmentation, a white or lighter surface layer forms as the treated area heals. New pink tissue emerges gradually over two to four weeks. Sun exposure to the face does not affect healing.
What to expect long-term
Crown lengthening is permanent. Once bone has been reshaped to expose more clinical crown, it does not regenerate in the reshaped area. The new gum position is stable indefinitely. This is the preferred option when gum contouring is required before placing crowns or veneers, because the restorations can be fitted to a stable margin.
Purely soft-tissue laser reshaping is long-lasting but not always permanent. In some patients, particularly younger patients with strong gum tissue growth patterns, the gum can gradually creep back over the tooth over a period of years. The rate varies significantly between individuals. When regrowth does occur, laser re-treatment is straightforward: a short follow-up appointment under local anaesthetic with the same minimal recovery window as the original procedure.
Depigmentation results are permanent in the majority of cases. The melanin-producing cells (melanocytes) responsible for gum pigmentation are removed or destroyed by the laser. In a small proportion of patients with high systemic melanin production, some pigmentation can return within two to five years; re-treatment is possible.

Schedule gum work before veneers
If combining gum contouring with veneers, the gum work must come first. The gum line needs to stabilise (typically 1-2 weeks) before the veneer margins can be prepared accurately. Plan a trip of at least 12-14 days if combining both procedures, or two separate trips.
Allow 3-5 days in-city post-procedure
Most laser reshaping cases need 3-5 days for initial healing before flying home comfortably. Plan your outbound flight for day 5 or later after the gum procedure. Crown lengthening cases should wait until day 7 before a long-haul flight.
Soft-food access in Vietnam is excellent
Post-procedure dietary restrictions (soft foods for 5-7 days) are easy to manage in Vietnam. Vietnamese cuisine includes pho, congee, steamed rice, and soft noodle dishes that are not only diet-compliant but genuinely enjoyable. Recovery eating is not a hardship in any SmileJet city.
