What is teeth whitening

Teeth whitening uses peroxide-based gel — either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide — to break down the organic colour compounds (chromogens) that accumulate in tooth enamel and dentine. The peroxide molecules penetrate the enamel and oxidise the stain molecules, lightening the tooth from within rather than simply coating the surface.

In-chair whitening is a chairside procedure. A high-concentration hydrogen peroxide gel (typically 25–40%) is applied to the teeth and activated by an LED light source — most commonly the Zoom blue LED system or the BeyondPolus lamp. A full in-chair session runs three 15-minute cycles of gel application plus light activation, taking approximately 45–60 minutes in the chair. You arrive, the dentist isolates your gums with a barrier, applies the gel, runs the light, and you leave with whitened teeth the same day.

Take-home whitening uses a lower concentration carbamide peroxide gel (10–22%) in custom-fitted trays made from impressions of your teeth. You wear the trays at home for 1–2 hours per day (or overnight for lower-concentration gels) for 10–14 days. The result is comparable to in-chair whitening but delivered gradually. The trays are reusable for years — you only need to buy replacement gel cartridges for maintenance.

Most patients achieve 4–8 shades of improvement in a single in-chair session. Results typically last 12–24 months depending on dietary habits and maintenance. Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco are the main drivers of re-staining.

Pricing across the five SmileJet cities

City Typical price (US$)
Hanoi $110 – 150 See Hanoi →
Ho Chi Minh City $120 – 160 See Ho Chi Minh City →
Da Nang $98 – 140 See Da Nang →
Hoi An $110 – 140 See Hoi An →
Phu Quoc $130 – 175 See Phu Quoc →
Prices are typical ranges from SmileJet partner clinics in each city. Actual quotes vary by case complexity, materials, and clinic tier. Treatment trip durations are typical for the standard protocol.

Prices are for a single in-chair Zoom or BeyondPolus session. Take-home custom tray kits (trays plus a course of gel) typically cost US$65–US$120 across all five cities. Some clinics bundle a take-home maintenance kit with the in-chair session — confirm at the consultation.

In-chair vs take-home whitening

Factor In-chair (Zoom / BeyondPolus) Take-home (Opalescence / Polanight)
Time 45–60 min chairside, result same day 10–14 days of daily tray wear at home
Cost in Vietnam US$98 – US$175 in-chair US$65 – US$120 custom trays + gel
Shade improvement 4–8 shades in one session 4–8 shades over 10–14 days
Longevity 12–24 months 12–24 months; trays reusable for top-ups
Convenience Single visit; ideal for dental trips Requires at-home compliance over two weeks
Sensitivity Possible 24–48h post-treatment sensitivity Lower concentration; less sensitivity risk

For dental tourists, in-chair whitening is the practical choice — results in a single appointment, no trays to manage on the trip. Take-home kits suit patients who want to start a gradual programme at home or top up results between visits.

Whitening systems available in Vietnam

Zoom (Philips)
In-chair

The most widely available professional whitening system at top Vietnamese partner clinics. Blue LED lamp activation with a 25% hydrogen peroxide gel. Protocol is three cycles of 15 minutes each. The Zoom Desensitiser gel applied at the end of the session reduces post-treatment sensitivity. Same system used at specialist practices in Sydney and London.

BeyondPolus
In-chair

LED-activated in-chair system using a similar protocol to Zoom — typically three cycles of 15 minutes with a hydrogen peroxide gel. Slightly lower price point than Zoom at some partner clinics. Less globally branded than Zoom but clinically comparable in outcome data. Good choice for patients focused on cost rather than brand recognition.

Opalescence (Ultradent)
Take-home

Carbamide peroxide gel in pre-filled syringes, used in custom-fitted trays made from dental impressions. Available in 10%, 15%, and 20% concentrations. Worn for 1–2 hours daily (higher concentrations) or overnight (10% version). The industry-standard take-home system; widely stocked at Vietnamese partner clinics.

Polanight (SDI)
Take-home

Carbamide peroxide take-home gel well known in Australia and New Zealand. Available at some SmileJet partner clinics in Vietnam, making it a familiar option for Australian patients. Worn overnight in custom trays. 10%, 16%, and 22% concentrations available depending on case and patient sensitivity profile.

Who is a good candidate

Professional whitening works best on extrinsic staining — colour that has built up in the enamel from external sources. The most common causes are coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and natural ageing (enamel becomes more porous and yellowed over time). These stains respond well to peroxide-based whitening and typically produce the most dramatic before-and-after results.

Whitening does not work on intrinsic staining — colour changes that originate inside the tooth structure itself. The two most common intrinsic staining conditions are:

  • Tetracycline staining — grey or brown banding in the teeth caused by tetracycline antibiotic use during childhood tooth development. Peroxide gel cannot penetrate deep enough to address this. Veneers or crowns are the appropriate treatment if coverage is desired.
  • Fluorosis — white spots or brown patches caused by excess fluoride intake during childhood. Mild cases may respond partially to whitening; moderate to severe fluorosis does not. Microabrasion or veneers are more effective options.

Whitening also does not alter the shade of existing restorations — crowns, veneers, composite fillings, and ceramic inlays remain their original colour while the surrounding natural teeth lighten. This can create a visible mismatch if restorations sit in the smile zone. The dentist will assess this at the consultation.

Patients with active decay, gum disease, or cracked teeth should have these treated before whitening. The peroxide gel can penetrate exposed dentine through cracks or cavities and cause significant sensitivity or nerve irritation. A pre-whitening check is standard at all SmileJet partner clinics.

Good candidates
  • +Yellowing from coffee, tea, or red wine
  • +Staining from tobacco use
  • +General age-related darkening
  • +Healthy enamel and gums
  • +No active decay or gum disease
  • +Natural teeth (no veneers or crowns in the smile zone)
Not suitable for whitening
  • -Tetracycline (antibiotic) staining
  • -Fluorosis (moderate to severe)
  • -Crowns or veneers in the smile zone
  • -Active gum disease or decay
  • -Cracked or heavily worn enamel
  • -Pregnancy (precautionary)

Combining whitening with other treatments

Whitening before veneers. If your treatment plan includes porcelain veneers, whiten first — always. The ceramist making your veneers will shade-match them to your post-whitening natural tooth colour. If you whiten after veneers are placed, the natural teeth lighten but the veneers stay their original shade, creating a visible mismatch. The standard sequence is: whiten on Day 2 of the trip, allow 2 weeks for the shade to stabilise (it shifts slightly in the 10–14 days after whitening), then take veneer impressions. On shorter dental trips, some clinics whiten at the start and begin prep within 5–7 days, accepting a minor shade stabilisation caveat.

Whitening as part of a smile makeover. A full smile makeover — veneers plus whitening of non-veneered teeth, sometimes with gum contouring — produces the most comprehensive aesthetic result. Vietnamese partner clinics offering smile makeover packages typically sequence whitening at the start of the trip. The cost of in-chair whitening is sometimes bundled into smile makeover packages.

Whitening during an implant trip. Implant trips involve significant downtime between the placement appointment and later crown-fitting appointments. In-chair whitening fits comfortably into a rest day during this window. It adds 2–3 hours to one of the quieter days and does not interfere with the implant healing process. Many implant patients add whitening to their trip for this reason — the incremental cost is low and the result complements the final crown shade selection.

Common questions

How much does teeth whitening cost in Vietnam?
In-chair Zoom or BeyondPolus whitening starts from US$98 in Da Nang and runs to US$175 in Phu Quoc. Ho Chi Minh City is typically US$120–US$160 and Hanoi US$110–US$150. Take-home custom tray kits cost US$65–US$120. By comparison, Zoom whitening in Sydney runs A$600–A$1,200, so the saving is up to 85%.
How many shades whiter will my teeth get in one session?
Most patients achieve 4–8 shades of improvement in a single in-chair Zoom or BeyondPolus session. The result depends on your starting shade, the degree of extrinsic staining (coffee, tea, tobacco, red wine), and your natural tooth colour. Patients with heavy staining from lifestyle factors typically see the most dramatic improvement. Intrinsic staining from tetracycline antibiotics or fluorosis responds poorly to whitening and is not a suitable candidate for this treatment.
How long does teeth whitening last?
In-chair whitening typically lasts 12–24 months with normal dietary habits. Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco accelerate re-staining. Using a take-home maintenance kit every 6–12 months extends results significantly. Vietnamese partner clinics often supply a top-up take-home kit alongside the in-chair treatment for this purpose.
Can I combine whitening with veneers or implants in the same trip?
Yes, and it is strongly recommended to whiten before veneers are made. The shade of your whitened natural teeth sets the target for the veneer ceramist — veneers are shade-matched to the whitened result. Whitening after veneers only affects the natural teeth and creates a mismatch. For implant trips, whitening fits easily into the downtime between the placement appointment and the crown fitting appointment.
Will teeth whitening cause sensitivity?
Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect, affecting roughly one-third of patients. It typically appears during or up to 24 hours after the session and resolves without treatment. Vietnamese partner clinics applying Zoom use the built-in Zoom Desensitiser gel at the end of the session to reduce post-treatment sensitivity. Patients with existing sensitivity or thin enamel should discuss this with the dentist at the consultation.
Does whitening work on crowns, veneers, or composite fillings?
No. Whitening gel only affects natural tooth enamel and dentine. Crowns, veneers, composite fillings, and ceramic restorations do not respond to peroxide-based whitening. If you have existing restorations in the smile zone and whiten your natural teeth, the restorations will appear darker by comparison. A dentist will assess your existing restorations at the consultation and advise accordingly.

Maintaining your whitening results long-term

The 48-hour rule after whitening

For the first 48 hours after in-chair whitening, teeth are more porous and susceptible to re-staining. Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, beetroot, tomato-based sauces, and dark-coloured foods during this window. Stick to white and light-coloured foods and drinks. This 48-hour critical window is when most premature re-staining occurs. After 48 hours, normal dietary habits resume, and staining happens at the standard rate.

Take-home maintenance kit for longevity

Vietnamese partner clinics typically supply a take-home custom tray kit alongside in-chair whitening, either bundled or at US$65-120 separately. The trays are custom-fitted and come with a course of 10% or 16% carbamide peroxide gel. Using the trays for one 60-minute session every 3-6 months extends the result significantly. Custom trays last several years before needing replacement.

Sensitivity management

About one-third of patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity after whitening, typically for 12-24 hours. The Zoom Desensitiser gel applied at the end of the session reduces this. Patients with pre-existing sensitivity should mention this at the consultation so the dentist can use a lower-concentration gel protocol. Potassium nitrate toothpaste (Sensodyne or equivalent) used for two weeks before whitening also reduces post-treatment sensitivity.

Lifestyle factors that drive re-staining

Coffee and tea are the primary drivers of re-staining for most patients — not because of their colour alone but because of the tannins that penetrate enamel. Drinking through a straw (for cold drinks) bypasses much of the tooth surface contact. Tobacco is the fastest re-staining factor and also carries significant oral health risks beyond whitening. Patients who eliminate or reduce tobacco and switch to drinking tea through a straw consistently report longer-lasting results than the 12-24 month average.
