Dental implants in Vietnam
Single-tooth and multi-tooth dental implants across all five SmileJet Vietnamese cities. The same Straumann and Nobel Biocare implants as Sydney specialists place, at a fraction of the cost. Two-trip standard protocol, four to six days per trip.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a titanium screw placed into the jawbone where a missing tooth used to be. After it integrates with the bone (typically three months), a custom-made crown is fixed on top. The end result looks, functions, and is cared for like a natural tooth.
Implants are the modern replacement for bridges (which require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth) and partial dentures (which sit on top of the gum and shift while eating). Once integrated, an implant transmits chewing force into the jaw bone the way a natural tooth root does, which preserves bone density over time.
The procedure breaks into three phases. Placement: a 60-90 minute surgical appointment under local anaesthetic; the implant goes in, the gum is closed, you go back to the hotel. Healing: three to four months at home while the bone integrates with the titanium. Crown placement: a second trip; the gum is uncovered, an abutment is placed, the custom crown is fitted. Total time-in-clinic across both trips is approximately 8-10 hours.

The two-trip implant timeline
The standard implant protocol uses two short trips with three to four months of healing at home in between. Each trip is roughly four to six days.
Day 1: arrival, rest, hydrate. Day 2: consultation, X-ray or CBCT scan, treatment plan confirmation. Day 3: implant placement under local anaesthetic, 60-90 minutes in the chair. Day 4: post-op check, prescription review, light recovery, fly home. Total in-clinic time: roughly 4 hours.
Osseointegration: the implant fuses with your jaw bone. No appointment required during this period. Brush carefully around the site, avoid hard chewing on that side. Your home dentist can do a one-month check if you prefer.
Day 1: arrival. Day 2: gum opening (small procedure under local), abutment placement, impression. Days 3-4: dental lab fabricates the custom crown. Day 5: crown try-in, final fit, fly home. Total in-clinic time: roughly 4 hours.
Some Vietnamese partner clinics offer immediate-load or same-day implant protocols for clinically suitable cases, a single trip of 7-10 days. This is case-by-case and depends on bone quality, occlusion, and the patient's specific anatomy.
Implant brands stocked at Vietnamese partner clinics
Straumann (Switzerland)
Premium tier. The reference standard for implants. Roxolid and SLActive surface. Top Vietnamese partners stock the BLT, BLX, and Bone Level lines. The same product a Sydney specialist would place.
Nobel Biocare (Sweden)
Premium tier. NobelActive, NobelReplace, and NobelParallel CC commonly available. The TiUnite surface has the longest published track record in implant survival data.
Osstem (South Korea)
Mid-tier. TS, TSIII, and TSV systems. Strong outcome data in Asian populations specifically. Often the cost-effective choice when patient and dentist agree on a non-premium-tier option.
Dentium (South Korea)
Mid-tier. SuperLine and Implantium systems. Common in mid-priced Vietnamese partner cases. Established outcome data, FDA-cleared.
Specific brand availability varies by clinic. The brand of your implant is part of your written treatment plan, not a surprise. If you have a brand preference, name it when you request a quote.
Why Vietnam for implants specifically
Identical implant brands. Top Vietnamese clinics stock Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem, and Dentium: the same brands a Sydney specialist would place. The implant in your jaw is identical to the implant a Sydney specialist would place. The difference is what surrounds the implant: rent, salaries, insurance overhead.
Outcome benchmarking. The Moraschini 2015 systematic review (IJOMS Vol 44(3) pp.377-388) reports a pooled five-year implant survival rate of approximately 94.6%. Our verified Vietnamese partners meet this benchmark; clinics whose outcomes drift below it are removed from the network.
Partner clinic support. If a treatment-related issue arises, SmileJet coordinates directly with the Vietnamese partner clinic network to help resolve it.
Conservative two-trip protocol. Most cases use the standard two-trip protocol with three months of healing between placement and crown. Same-trip immediate-load protocols are offered when clinically appropriate, but the default is the conservative path with the longest published track record.
Bone grafting and complex implant cases
When bone grafting is needed
If a tooth has been missing for more than 12-18 months, the underlying jawbone begins to resorb. A CBCT 3D scan during your Day 2 consultation reveals the bone volume available. If bone density is insufficient at the planned implant site, grafting adds bone material before or at the time of placement. Grafting adds US$300-700 per site to the case cost and is quoted upfront.
Sinus lift for upper jaw implants
Upper jaw implants near the molars are sometimes limited by the proximity of the maxillary sinus. A sinus lift procedure adds bone below the sinus floor to create adequate depth for the implant. Top Vietnamese partner clinics in HCMC and Hanoi perform sinus lifts routinely. The procedure adds roughly 4-6 months of healing time and US$600-900 to the case cost.
Same-day immediate-load implants
Some clinically suitable cases can receive a provisional crown on the same day as the implant placement, eliminating the need for a second trip. Candidacy depends on bone density, occlusion, and the specific anatomy of each case. Not every patient qualifies. A CBCT scan at consultation determines eligibility. Immediate-load protocols add US$200-400 to the standard case cost at most partner clinics.
Multiple implants in one visit
Placing three, four, or six implants in a single surgical session is routine at top Vietnamese partner clinics. The session takes proportionally longer (60-90 minutes per implant) but surgical anaesthesia is maintained throughout. Multiple implants placed in a single visit also mean a single healing period, which is more efficient than staged placements if anatomy permits.
How to prepare for your implant trip
Send X-rays before you fly
A recent panoramic or periapical X-ray allows the partner clinic to pre-assess your bone density before your arrival consultation. This shortens the day-two consultation and sometimes allows same-day placement if the clinical picture is clear. Send X-rays (JPG, DICOM, or PDF) via your SmileJet coordinator.
Confirm your implant brand preference
If you have a preference for Straumann or Nobel Biocare, state this in your initial enquiry. Both brands are available at top-tier partner clinics; mid-tier clinics may stock Osstem or Dentium only. Confirming upfront avoids last-minute changes to the treatment plan on arrival.
Arrange a home-dentist handover letter
Ask your home dentist to write a brief clinical summary of your dental history, any relevant medical conditions, and current medications. Vietnamese partner clinics request this for complex cases (diabetes, blood thinners, osteoporosis medications) where medical context changes the protocol.
Pack for post-surgical recovery
A soft-bristle toothbrush, chlorhexidine mouthwash (available locally but easier to bring from home), paracetamol, and saline nasal rinse (useful for sinus-lift cases where nasal pressure management matters). The clinic will provide prescription pain relief if needed.
Which Vietnamese city suits your implant case?
Clinical standards are equivalent across the SmileJet network. Complex cases favour the deeper specialist networks in HCMC and Hanoi; straightforward single-implant cases can be done anywhere.
HCMC: complex cases and specialist access
Ho Chi Minh City has the deepest implantologist and oral surgeon network across the five SmileJet cities. Patients with bone grafting requirements, multiple simultaneous implants, or previous implant failure cases are best placed in HCMC where subspecialist support (periodontists, oral surgeons, radiologists) is available within the same clinic or nearby. Sinus lift cases are also best handled in HCMC or Hanoi.
Da Nang: best price-per-implant combination
Da Nang offers the lowest per-implant pricing across the SmileJet network (from US$850 for Osstem and Dentium) alongside beach-walk recovery. For straightforward single-implant or two-implant cases in adequate bone, Da Nang provides value without compromising clinical protocol. My Khe Beach is within walking distance of most partner clinics.
Hanoi: cooler recovery and cultural tourism
Hanoi is ideal for patients scheduling implant trips in the October-April dry season who want a cooler, less humid recovery climate. Old Quarter street walking, museum culture, and Halong Bay day-trip extensions make the healing window genuinely enjoyable. The Hanoi implant network includes several university-affiliated specialists.
Phu Quoc: visa-free and single-implant cases
Phu Quoc offers 30-day visa-free entry for all passport holders flying direct. For straightforward single-implant cases in good bone, Phu Quoc partner clinics provide the same Straumann and Osstem options. The island clinic network is smaller, but resort-pace recovery on Long Beach with minimal walking demands suits post-surgical comfort.
