What is a dental implant

A dental implant is a titanium screw placed into the jawbone where a missing tooth used to be. After it integrates with the bone (typically three months), a custom-made crown is fixed on top. The end result looks, functions, and is cared for like a natural tooth.

Implants are the modern replacement for bridges (which require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth) and partial dentures (which sit on top of the gum and shift while eating). Once integrated, an implant transmits chewing force into the jaw bone the way a natural tooth root does, which preserves bone density over time.

The procedure breaks into three phases. Placement: a 60-90 minute surgical appointment under local anaesthetic; the implant goes in, the gum is closed, you go back to the hotel. Healing: three to four months at home while the bone integrates with the titanium. Crown placement: a second trip; the gum is uncovered, an abutment is placed, the custom crown is fitted. Total time-in-clinic across both trips is approximately 8-10 hours.

Pricing across the five SmileJet cities

City Typical price (US$)
Hanoi $900 – 1,150 See Hanoi →
Ho Chi Minh City $880 – 1,150 See Ho Chi Minh City →
Da Nang $850 – 1,050 See Da Nang →
Hoi An $880 – 1,100 See Hoi An →

Prices are typical ranges from SmileJet partner clinics in each city. Actual quotes vary by case complexity, materials, and clinic tier. Treatment trip durations are typical for the standard protocol.

Prices include the implant itself, the abutment, and a standard porcelain-fused-to-metal or zirconia crown. Bone grafting (if required) and immediate-load same-day options are quoted separately at clinic-specific rates.

Implant brands stocked at Vietnamese partner clinics

Straumann (Switzerland)
Premium tier

The reference standard for implants. Roxolid + SLActive surface. Top Vietnamese partners stock the BLT, BLX, and Bone Level lines. Same product as a Sydney specialist would place.

Nobel Biocare (Sweden)
Premium tier

NobelActive, NobelReplace, and NobelParallel CC commonly available. The TiUnite surface has the longest published track record in implant survival data.

Osstem (South Korea)
Mid-tier

TS, TSIII, and TSV systems. Strong outcome data in Asian populations specifically. Often the cost-effective choice when patient and dentist agree on a non-premium-tier option.

Dentium (South Korea)
Mid-tier

SuperLine and Implantium systems. Common in mid-priced Vietnamese partner cases. Established outcome data, FDA-cleared.

Specific brand availability varies by clinic. The brand of your implant is part of your written treatment plan, not a surprise. If you have a brand preference, name it when you request a quote.

The two-trip implant timeline

01

Trip one — placement

Days 1-4 (in Vietnam)

Day 1: arrival, rest, hydrate. Day 2: consultation, X-ray or CBCT scan, treatment plan confirmation. Day 3: implant placement under local anaesthetic, 60-90 minutes in the chair. Day 4: post-op check, prescription review, light recovery, fly home. Total in-clinic time: roughly 4 hours.

02

Healing phase

Months 1-3 at home

Osseointegration — the implant fuses with your jaw bone. No appointment required during this period. Brush carefully around the site, avoid hard chewing on that side. Your home dentist can do a one-month check if you prefer.

03

Trip two — crown placement

Days 1-5 (in Vietnam)

Day 1: arrival. Day 2: gum opening (small procedure under local), abutment placement, impression. Days 3-4: dental lab fabricates the custom crown. Day 5: crown try-in, final fit, fly home. Total in-clinic time: roughly 4 hours.

Some Vietnamese partner clinics offer immediate-load or same-day implant protocols for clinically suitable cases — single trip of 7-10 days. This is case-by-case and depends on bone quality, occlusion, and the patient's specific anatomy.

Why Vietnam for implants specifically

Identical implant brands. Top Vietnamese clinics stock Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem, and Dentium — the same brands a Sydney specialist would place. The implant in your jaw is identical to the implant a Sydney specialist would place. The difference is what surrounds the implant: rent, salaries, insurance overhead.

Outcome benchmarking. The Moraschini 2015 systematic review (IJOMS Vol 44(3) pp.377-388) reports a pooled five-year implant survival rate of approximately 94.6%. Our verified Vietnamese partners meet this benchmark; clinics whose outcomes drift below it are removed from the network.

Country-wide guarantee. If your implant or crown develops a treatment-related issue within 12 months, we coordinate free re-treatment at any of our Vietnamese partner clinics — Hoi An patients can be re-treated in Da Nang, Phu Quoc patients in Ho Chi Minh City. The guarantee follows you, not your original city.

Conservative two-trip protocol. Most cases use the standard two-trip protocol with three months of healing between placement and crown. Same-trip immediate-load protocols are offered when clinically appropriate, but the default is the conservative path with the longest published track record.

Common questions

Are Vietnamese implants the same quality as Sydney?
The implant brand is the same — Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem. The training pedigree at the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology produces specialists comparable to international standards. Outcome data at protocol-aligned partner clinics meets the published Moraschini 2015 benchmark of approximately 94.6% five-year survival.
How long does the implant last?
Modern dental implants are designed to last 20+ years and often a lifetime when cared for properly. The Moraschini systematic review tracks five-year survival at approximately 94.6%; ten-year survival data is also strong. The crown on top of the implant has a shorter lifespan (10-15 years typical) and may need replacement during the implant's lifetime.
Will I be able to fly the same day as the placement?
You can technically fly within 24 hours, but most partner clinics recommend resting one full day before a long-haul flight. The placement appointment is on day 3 of trip one, with day 4 as a buffer day before flying.
Can I do the second trip in a different Vietnamese city?
Generally yes. The clinical record transfers across the SmileJet network. If you placed in Hanoi and want crown placement in Da Nang, the partner clinics can coordinate. Continuity with the same clinical team is preferable but not required.
What if my implant fails?
If a treatment-related implant failure occurs within 12 months, the country-wide guarantee covers free re-placement at any SmileJet Vietnamese partner clinic. Failures from non-treatment causes (accident, injury, post-treatment care non-compliance) are not covered. The Moraschini 2015 benchmark suggests roughly 1 in 17-18 implants will need attention over five years; we expect this rate to be substantially lower than the population average given our verification standards.
Do I need bone grafting?
Some patients with extended tooth-loss history have bone density too low for a standard implant. CBCT 3D scan during the consultation reveals this. If grafting is required, it is typically done at the time of placement and adds US$300-700 per site to the case cost. Some cases need a separate grafting procedure 4-6 months before placement.
