Plan your dental trip to Bali

By SmileJet Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

Planning a dental trip to Bali is more straightforward than most Australians expect. The destination is familiar, the visa process takes minutes on arrival, and most east coast capitals have direct flights landing you in Bali in under six hours. There is no complex logistics chain โ€” it is the dental holiday you would probably book anyway.

This hub covers every practical step: which flights to book, how the Visa on Arrival works, which Bali neighbourhood suits dental recovery best, and the specific Australian considerations around health funds and customs. Use the cards below to jump to whichever section you need.

Your planning timeline

A typical first-trip timeline for an Australian patient booking a single procedure such as implants or veneers. Complex cases (All-on-4, full mouth) may require two separate trips.

  1. 1
    8 weeks out
    • Request a free SmileJet quote โ€” describe your treatment, share any X-rays if you have them.
    • Review clinic options and pricing. Ask Made (your coordinator) any questions.
    • Book your flights. Flexible/changeable fares cost a little more but protect you if treatment runs longer than expected.
  2. 2
    6 weeks out
    • Confirm your clinic appointment with your coordinator.
    • Book accommodation. Match your neighbourhood to your clinic (see Where to Stay).
    • Arrange travel insurance โ€” ensure it covers dental complications and medical evacuation.
  3. 3
    4 weeks out
    • Gather dental records and any X-rays taken in the last two years.
    • Check your passport โ€” must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date and have 2 blank pages.
    • Consider applying for e-VoA online (saves the on-arrival queue).
  4. 4
    2 weeks out
    • Download Grab (the local ride-share app) and set up payment before you leave.
    • Confirm your first appointment date and time with Made.
    • Notify your private health fund if you plan to claim (check your policy first).
  5. 5
    Day of departure
    • Pack dental records, X-rays, travel insurance policy, and any prescription medications in your carry-on.
    • Check in online. Arrive at the airport 2.5 hours before international departure.
    • Message Made when you board โ€” she will confirm your airport transfer or Grab pickup.
  6. 6
    Arrival in Bali
    • Follow signs to Visa on Arrival before immigration. Pay IDR 500,000 (~A$57). Takes 10-20 minutes.
    • Grab from the airport to your hotel. Typical fares A$7โ€“15 depending on neighbourhood.
    • Rest. Your first appointment is the following morning โ€” arriving the afternoon before gives you recovery time.
  7. 7
    Returning home
    • Request an itemised English invoice from the clinic. Needed for health fund claims.
    • Declare any prescription medication (antibiotics, pain relief) on your Australian customs card.
    • After implant surgery: do not fly within 48 hours of the procedure if possible. Confirm with your dentist.

What to bring

Pack these in your carry-on, not your checked luggage. You will need them on day one.

๐Ÿ“‹
Dental records

Any treatment notes or summary letters from your Australian dentist. Helps the Bali clinic pick up exactly where your care left off.

๐Ÿฆท
X-rays (if available)

Digital copies on USB or emailed to yourself. OPG (panoramic) is most useful. Do not worry if you do not have them โ€” the clinic can take new ones.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ
Travel insurance documents

Policy number, insurer phone number, and emergency contact. Ensure your policy covers dental complications and medical evacuation.

๐Ÿ’ณ
Payment method

Most Bali clinics accept Visa/Mastercard. A Wise or Revolut card avoids foreign transaction fees. Have some cash IDR for the Visa on Arrival.

๐Ÿ’Š
Medication list

A written list of all prescription medications you take. Some interact with dental anaesthetics or antibiotics. Generic names as well as brand names.

๐Ÿ“„
Prescription letter

If you are carrying prescription medication into Indonesia, bring the original prescription or a doctor's letter. Smooths customs both ways.

โœˆ๏ธ
Return flight confirmation

Required for Visa on Arrival. Digital copy on your phone is fine.

๐Ÿจ
Accommodation confirmation

Also required for Visa on Arrival. Hotel booking confirmation in English.

Trip planning FAQ

How long does a typical dental trip to Bali take?

It depends on the treatment. A single implant placement takes 2-3 days in Bali (the osseointegration happens at home over 3-6 months, then you return for the crown). Veneers are typically a 5-7 day trip โ€” prep, temporaries, and final fitting. All-on-4 implants are usually 7-10 days for the first trip, then a shorter follow-up trip for the final prosthetic. Your SmileJet quote will include a recommended trip length based on your specific treatment plan.

Do I need to speak Indonesian or is English sufficient?

English is sufficient at every point in the dental tourism journey in Bali. All SmileJet-verified clinics have English-speaking dentists and patient coordinators. Your SmileJet coordinator Made is a native English speaker. Grab drivers in Bali routinely use Google Maps and gesture โ€” you do not need to communicate beyond showing them your destination on your phone. Restaurants, hotels, and pharmacies in Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, and Ubud all operate in English for tourists.

Can my partner or family member come along?

Yes, and most patients choose to bring a partner. Bali is a destination where a non-dental companion has an enormous amount to do: beach, spa, cooking classes, rice terrace walks, surf lessons, temple visits. Your appointments typically run 2-4 hours in the morning, leaving the rest of each day free. Some partners use the trip as a wellness retreat in Ubud or Sanur while the patient completes treatment.

What if my treatment takes longer than expected?

This is why we recommend booking flexible/changeable airfares. Some treatments โ€” particularly where a tooth extraction precedes an implant โ€” require a healing period before the next step. Your dentist will have a clear plan and timeline before you commit, but complications can extend this by a few days. Made will help you reschedule accommodation and contact your airline to change your return if needed. Travel insurance with trip-extension cover is also recommended.

What currency should I bring?

Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) is needed for the Visa on Arrival (IDR 500,000 in cash, or USD $35 cash โ€” bring small US bills as backup). Most dental clinics accept Visa and Mastercard. Hotels, restaurants, and shops in tourist areas accept cards widely, though ATMs are plentiful if you prefer cash. A Wise or Revolut travel card minimises foreign transaction fees on AUD. Avoid airport money exchange โ€” rates in Seminyak, Kuta, and Sanur are significantly better.

Is it safe to drink the water and eat out during dental recovery?

Do not drink tap water in Bali โ€” bottled water is cheap and universal. All reputable restaurants use filtered water for cooking. After dental surgery, your clinic will advise on soft foods for the first 24-48 hours. Bali has excellent soft food options: banana smoothies, porridge, soft rice, cooked vegetables, and soups are everywhere. Avoid very hot, very cold, or spicy food for the first day or two after treatment. Your clinic will give you a post-operative care sheet in English.
