Country Comparison

Vietnam vs Cambodia for dental tourism

By SmileJet Editorial Team · Published May 2026

Both are mainland Southeast Asian markets with verified clinics on SmileJet. Vietnam has the larger network and more travel options. Cambodia has the lowest mainland prices and the Angkor Wat extension. Here is how to choose.

When to choose Cambodia (Phnom Penh)

Cambodia is the right call when:

  • Price is your dominant criterion. The 7 to 12% saving versus equivalent Vietnamese cities compounds across multi-treatment cases into thousands of dollars.
  • You want the Angkor Wat extension. Nothing in Vietnam matches this combination — the 45-minute domestic PNH-to-REP flight makes one of the wonders of the world an easy add-on.
  • You value boutique-scale attention. The smaller clinic network and the personal-coordinator-pickup model produce more handholding than larger destinations can.
  • You speak French. Phnom Penh\'s francophone legacy means many senior dentists speak French as well as English — useful for francophone Canadian, Belgian, or Swiss patients.
  • Cultural depth matters. The Royal Palace, the National Museum, and the broader Khmer Empire heritage produce a different kind of trip experience than Vietnam\'s war-history-and-French-colonial framing.

When to choose Vietnam

Vietnam is the better fit when:

  • You want the deepest verified clinic network in our system. HCMC alone has 20+ featured clinics; Hanoi and Da Nang each have 15+. More options means more scheduling flexibility, especially for complex multi-trip cases.
  • English fluency is critical. Top Vietnamese clinics in our network have been serving international patients longer and have proportionally more English-fluent senior staff.
  • You want beach recovery. Da Nang\'s My Khe Beach, Hoi An\'s old town, or Phu Quoc\'s island setting are all beach-led recovery options that Phnom Penh does not match.
  • You want direct flights. Vietnam Airlines runs direct routes from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, London, Frankfurt, and Tokyo to HCMC and Hanoi. Cambodia\'s PNH airport requires a Singapore or Bangkok connection from most origins.
  • You\'ve already been to Vietnam for leisure. Familiarity with the country reduces friction.

A third option: combine both

Some patients with multi-trip cases split between the two countries. Trip 1 in HCMC (deeper clinic network, more flight options for first international dental trip) and Trip 2 in Phnom Penh (lower price for the simpler crown-fitting work, plus the Angkor Wat extension as the celebratory end of treatment). The 1-hour direct flight between PNH and SGN makes this practical.

SmileJet supports this — your coordinator handles the cross-country logistics and the treatment coordination support covers the work regardless of where each trip is delivered. The only constraint is that the same clinical team should ideally see both trips for continuity, so we usually recommend pairing clinics within the same network rather than mixing.
