Recovery activities in Phnom Penh

What to do (and what to avoid) on each day of your dental tourism recovery. Calibrated to typical implant, All-on-4, and veneer healing timelines.
Day-by-day recovery activity guide
Rest at hotel
After implant placement or All-on-4 surgery, the first 6 to 8 hours are for rest. Apply ice packs as instructed (10 minutes on, 10 off). Soft food only — yogurt, smoothies, lukewarm soup. No alcohol, no smoking, no strenuous activity. WhatsApp your coordinator if anything feels unusual.
Hotel pool, gentle riverside walk
Light activity helps reduce swelling. Most patients walk to a nearby riverside cafe for breakfast (kuy teav noodle soup is ideal). Hotel pool is fine if your sutures are non-dissolving and your dentist confirmed; otherwise stay dry above the neck.
Mekong river sunset cruise
Sit-down activity, low effort, the cool river breeze helps with any residual swelling. Cruises depart from Sisowath Quay at 5pm. Soft food on board (most cruises offer noodle soup, congee, or simple rice dishes).
Royal Palace + National Museum
Cultural day. Both sites have rest areas and air conditioning in interior galleries. Plan 90 minutes for each, with a sit-down lunch in between. Modest dress required at the Royal Palace (cover shoulders and knees). Photography permitted in most areas.
Russian Market + cafe day
Shopping and lingering at cafes. Russian Market is covered with fans throughout. Cafe culture in BKK1 is excellent — the smoothie scene rivals Sydney or Melbourne. Most patients have largely normal energy by day 4.
Final clinic check or fly to Siem Reap
Final post-op check at clinic in the morning. If clearance is given, this is the day to fly to Siem Reap (45-minute domestic flight) for the optional Angkor Wat extension. Or fly home, rested.
Soft Khmer food for the first 48 hours
Khmer cuisine adapts well to dental recovery. The local soup tradition runs deep — kuy teav (rice noodles in clear broth) is essentially soft food and is the standard local breakfast. Bai sach chrouk (broken rice with thinly sliced grilled pork) can be pulled apart easily. Num banh chok (rice noodles with curry) is gentle when served lukewarm.
For the first 24 to 48 hours after major work, stick to room-temperature smoothies, soft scrambled eggs, broth, and yogurt. BKK1 supermarkets stock all of these. Many hotels will prepare custom soft-food meals on request.
Avoid: hot soups (can exacerbate swelling), chilli (irritates surgical sites), nuts and seeds (can lodge near sutures), alcohol (delays healing). Khmer chilli sauce ("teuk trey") is on every table — ask for "min dak m\'tay" (no chilli).
What to avoid during recovery
- Hot weather day-trips: Phnom Penh in dry season (Nov–Feb) sits 28 to 32°C. Avoid full-day outdoor activities for 48 hours after major work. The Killing Fields at Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng are full-day mentally and physically — schedule for day 4+ when energy and emotional capacity are restored.
- Tuk-tuk dust roads: Tuk-tuk rides on the dustier streets (parts of Toul Kork or anywhere outside the central core) can stir respiratory irritation. Use Grab or PassApp closed-cab taxis for the first 48 hours.
- Alcohol and smoking: Both delay healing significantly. Most clinics ask you to abstain for at least 7 days post-implant.
- Strenuous exercise: No swimming laps, no gym, no hiking for 7 days. Gentle walking and casual hotel-pool floating is fine after day 2.
