Why price alone is not the right basis for choosing

The 25% price gap between Phnom Penh (US$780) and Bangkok (US$1,000) is real but compounds over a multi-treatment case. On a single implant + crown, the saving is around US$300. On a four-implant plus crowns case, around US$1,200. On an All-on-4 with ten anterior veneers, around US$3,000+. The case size determines whether the price gap matters more than the city scale.

Other factors that should weigh into the decision:

  • Verified clinic depth. Bangkok has the largest verified-clinic depth in Southeast Asia. HCMC has the largest mainland network on SmileJet. Phnom Penh has the smallest, by design — we vet rigorously and refuse fast scaling.
  • Travel logistics. Bangkok offers the most direct flights from Western markets. Phnom Penh requires a Singapore connection. The flight-time gap is real, especially for older patients.
  • English fluency. Bangkok\'s top international hospitals offer the best English-language experience in the region. Phnom Penh and Vietnam clinics have strong but slightly less polished English depth.
  • Add-on travel. Phnom Penh\'s Angkor Wat extension is the single most distinctive add-on. Bali offers beach recovery. Bangkok offers food and shopping. Vietnam coast offers Hoi An.

For a price-led decision on a complex case, Phnom Penh wins. For first-time patients with anxiety, Bangkok or HCMC may be worth the price gap. For beach-led recovery, Bali or Da Nang. For combined-with-Angkor-Wat, Phnom Penh.

What stays constant across all the cheap-implant cities

The implant component itself does not vary by city. A Straumann implant placed in Phnom Penh, Bangkok, or Bali is the same titanium screw made in the same Swiss factory. Survival rates in well-run clinics across all major Southeast Asian dental tourism cities cluster around the published 5-year benchmark of 94.6% (Moraschini et al. 2015 systematic review).

What varies is overhead. Phnom Penh has lower clinic rents, lower clinical salaries, and proportionally less marketing spend baked into prices than Bangkok. The implant goes into the bone the same way. The crown is fitted the same way. The pre-op CBCT is taken on similar equipment. Only the cost structure differs.

This is the simple core of dental tourism economics, and it scales — at any case size, the implant component cost is a small share of the total. The rest is the local cost of clinical labour, real estate, and marketing. Cities at the lower end of that cost structure offer the same outcomes for less money.
