Straumann vs Osstem implants in Phnom Penh: which to choose

When Straumann is worth the premium

Three scenarios where our partner dentists default to Straumann:

  • Compromised bone or healing factors. If you have lower bone density, are diabetic (controlled), or are a long-term smoker (despite our advice), Straumann\'s SLActive surface offers faster osseointegration and stronger bone-to-implant contact in clinical evidence. The marginal benefit matters when conditions are not ideal.
  • Anterior aesthetic zone with thin bone. Front-tooth implants where bone width is borderline benefit from Straumann\'s narrower-diameter premium components and the broader range of abutment shapes available.
  • You want the longest possible track record. Straumann has been in market 70+ years with extensive published outcome data going out to 25 years. If you are 50 and want to maximise the implant\'s likely lifespan to age 80+, the longer track record reduces uncertainty.

When Osstem is the right call

For most straightforward cases, Osstem is the right call. Specifically:

  • Healthy bone, healthy patient. The 5-year survival differential between Straumann and Osstem in healthy bone is 1 to 2 percentage points — clinically real but small. For most healthy adults, Osstem produces equivalent functional outcomes at meaningfully lower cost.
  • Multiple implants where total cost matters. An All-on-4 case with Straumann components costs about US$2,000 more per arch than Osstem. Across both arches that is US$4,000. For most patients, the savings buy a Siem Reap extension and most of a hotel — and the clinical outcome is comparable.
  • You are already saving substantially versus home pricing. A Phnom Penh Osstem implant + crown costs A$1,652 versus A$5,500 to A$7,000 in Sydney. The cost gap to Sydney is so large that the marginal Straumann premium is not the right place to optimise.

What your dentist will actually say

If you ask "which should I choose?" at the consultation, expect a clinical answer rather than a sales answer. Our partner dentists default to:

  • Osstem for straightforward cases in healthy bone (the majority)
  • Straumann for compromised bone, anterior aesthetic zone, immediate-load protocols, or patient preference
  • Nobel Biocare (similar tier to Straumann) when the patient already has Nobel components from previous work

You are entitled to choose Straumann even if your clinical case does not require it. Many patients do, simply for peace of mind or for the longer track record. We do not push patients toward the cheaper option; we recommend based on the case and you decide.
