Implant Recovery Timeline

Dental implant recovery timeline in Phnom Penh

By SmileJet Editorial Team · Published May 2026

Day-by-day expectations from placement through to crown fitting. Most patients are surprised how mild the recovery actually is.

Trip 1: placement (4 days)

Day 1

Arrival and consultation

Land at PNH. Coordinator pickup, transfer to BKK1 or Daun Penh hotel. Consultation at clinic that afternoon: medical history review, photos, panoramic X-ray, 3D CBCT scan, treatment plan confirmed in writing. No surgical work today.

Day 2

Implant placement

The actual surgery is 60 to 90 minutes per implant under local anaesthetic. You walk out the same day. Mild swelling typically peaks at 24 to 48 hours then declines. Expect light bleeding for the first 2 to 3 hours; this is normal. Soft food, no alcohol, no smoking, gentle saline rinses from day 2 evening.

Day 3

Recovery day

Most patients are surprised how mild this feels. Mild jaw stiffness and some swelling but minimal pain (over-the-counter ibuprofen is sufficient for most). Gentle riverside walk, soft Khmer food (kuy teav noodle soup is ideal), hotel pool floating from late afternoon if you have non-dissolving sutures.

Day 4

Post-op review and departure

Morning post-op check at the clinic confirms healing is on track. Your coordinator briefs you on the 3 to 4 month healing window, hands you written aftercare instructions and the WhatsApp number for any questions. Afternoon flight home.

Healing at home: 3 to 4 months

Week 1 to 2 home: Sutures (if non-dissolving) typically removed by your home dentist or local clinic at 7 to 10 days. We coordinate this. Soft food extends to soft-to-medium texture. Brushing resumes gently around the implant site after day 7.

Week 3 to 6: Eat normally on the other side of your mouth. The implant is healing under the gum line; you cannot see or feel much external evidence. Coordinator WhatsApps every two weeks to check on progress.

Week 7 to 12: Most osseointegration is complete by week 12, but we wait the full 3 to 4 months for clinical confidence. No clinic visits required during this period.

Month 4: Coordinator schedules your Trip 2. Final pre-trip check via video consultation if you have any concerns; most patients fly without one.

Trip 2: crown placement (5 days)

Day 1

Arrival, impressions

PNH arrival, coordinator pickup, hotel check-in. That afternoon: clinical impressions or intraoral scan, abutment selection, shade matching for the crown. The osseointegration is verified clinically (the implant should not move).

Day 2

Temporary crown

Abutment fitted. Temporary crown placed while the permanent crown is fabricated in the lab over the next 2 to 3 days. You can eat softly on the temporary.

Day 3

Lab fabrication day

Free day. Most patients use it for the Royal Palace or National Museum. The lab is fabricating your permanent crown to the exact specifications taken on day 1.

Day 4

Permanent crown fitting

Permanent crown try-in. Bite check, contact adjustment, occlusal balancing. Once you and the dentist are happy, the crown is bonded. The treatment is now clinically complete.

Day 5

Final review and departure

Morning review confirms the bite has settled overnight without issue. Aftercare briefing covers cleaning around the implant, recommended hygiene visits, and the treatment coordination support process. Afternoon flight home or domestic flight to Siem Reap if you are extending with Angkor Wat.
