Insurance & Aftercare
Dental tourism insurance and aftercare in Cambodia
By SmileJet Editorial Team · Published May 2026
Three things work together to protect a Phnom Penh dental patient: standard travel insurance, the SmileJet treatment coordination support, and ongoing local-dentist relationships at home. Here is what each covers.
The three protective layers
1. Standard travel insurance
Covers
Trip cancellation, lost luggage, non-dental medical emergency, medical evacuation
Does not cover
The dental treatment itself (it is "elective" planned medical care)
Take a standard policy with Cambodia in the cover region. Disclose any pre-existing conditions honestly. Most retirees benefit from policies with extended medical-evacuation cover.
2. SmileJet treatment coordination support
Covers
Implant failure, crown/bridge/veneer failure, endodontic re-treatment, diagnostic re-imaging
Does not cover
Wear-and-tear, lifestyle damage, accident trauma, return-trip travel costs
Automatic with every Phnom Penh-matched treatment. Coordinator-managed claim process. HCMC sister-network fallback if return to Phnom Penh is impractical.
3. Local dentist at home
Covers
Routine 6-monthly hygiene, nightguard adjustments, minor crown adjustments, emergency local care
Does not cover
Re-treatment of failed work (covered under our guarantee instead)
We help you find an English-speaking local dentist for routine care. Your Phnom Penh treatment records (X-rays, CBCT, treatment notes) come with you in English.
Should I buy specialised dental tourism insurance?
Some companies sell specialised dental tourism insurance products that cover the dental treatment itself. Our experience: for most cases, the premium-to-coverage ratio is poor. The SmileJet treatment coordination support already covers re-treatment for clinical failures, which is the dominant risk. Buying additional cover for a risk that is already covered is rarely cost-effective.
Specialised dental tourism insurance can make sense in specific scenarios: complex full mouth cases above US$25,000 where the dollar value at risk is large enough to justify a premium; patients with specific medical conditions that increase complication probability; or patients who want belt-and-braces protection and have the budget to afford it.
For straightforward cases under US$15,000, standard travel insurance plus the SmileJet guarantee is typically sufficient.
Aftercare at home, in detail
First 30 days post-treatment: Your coordinator WhatsApps weekly. Mild discomfort, sensitivity around new crowns, or minor adjustments are all expected. We coordinate any in-clinic remote review if needed.
Month 2 to 11: Quarterly check-in from your coordinator. We also recommend you book a routine hygiene visit at a local dentist around month 3 — they can take baseline records of your new dental work for any future comparison.
Month 12: Annual review prompt. We ask how the treatment is holding up. If everything is fine, the guarantee period closes routinely. If there is a clinical issue, the guarantee process is triggered.
Beyond month 12: Your routine dental care continues with your local dentist. Implants and quality crowns/veneers should last 10 to 20 years with good care. SmileJet remains available as a returning-patient option if you want additional treatment in the future.
