What to expect on a Hanoi implant trip

Hanoi is not a dental destination people stumble into. Patients who choose the capital over Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang are typically drawn by specific clinics, by a recommendation, or by the appeal of combining treatment with one of Southeast Asia's most compelling cities. Whatever brought you here, the trip follows a predictable structure that experienced dental tourists find reassuring once they understand it. This is an honest account of both visits.

Before you arrive: first contact and pre-trip preparation

Your first contact with a SmileJet-listed Hanoi clinic comes through your SmileJet coordinator, Hai, who manages all initial communication. Within 48 hours of enquiry, Hai sends a request for any existing X-rays – panoramic OPG, periapical films, or a previous CBCT if you have one. Payment – in USD or Vietnamese dong (VND) – occurs at the clinic; invoices are issued in USD for international patients.

Trip 1 (5–7 days): consultation, placement, and recovery

Day 1: Arrival at Noi Bai

Noi Bai International Airport sits 35–45 minutes north of central Hanoi – notably further from the city than airports in Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City. Do not plan a clinic appointment on arrival day. Your clinic will arrange airport pickup or hotel transfer; confirm this detail with Hai before departure. If you prefer to travel independently, Grab (the regional ride-hailing app) operates reliably from the airport and charges A$8–14 to the Old Quarter depending on traffic.

Accommodation in the Old Quarter or around Hoan Kiem Lake is the practical choice for implant patients. The area is compact and walkable, with dozens of pho and congee restaurants within a five-minute walk of most guesthouses – exactly what you want during the post-surgery soft diet phase. Check in, eat a proper meal, and rest. Jet lag management matters on Day 1 because Day 2 is the most cognitively demanding appointment of the trip.

A seasonal note: if travelling between October and March, pack a light jacket or fleece. Hanoi winters are genuinely cool (12–18°C at night), and the humidity makes it feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Unlike Vietnam's southern cities, Hanoi has four distinct seasons.

Day 2: CBCT scan and treatment plan review

Block 90–120 minutes for this appointment. The clinic takes a CBCT 3D scan (approximately 30 minutes, no discomfort, minimal radiation exposure) even if you have brought existing X-rays from home – the CBCT provides the bone density and anatomical data the surgeon needs for implant positioning and length selection. The scan is analysed chairside or reviewed by the surgeon within the same appointment.

The treatment plan review is the most important conversation of the trip. The treating clinician will confirm implant brand (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem, or Dentium), fixture dimensions, any bone grafting requirements, and the timeline for osseointegration before Trip 2. Implant pricing ranges from A$1,347 per fixture (Osstem, 10-year warranty) to A$2,141 per fixture (Straumann, lifetime warranty). All-on-4 restorations start from A$11,781 per arch; All-on-6 from A$13,758 per arch.

This is the appointment to ask every question you have. Write them down the night before. There is no such thing as a question that is too basic at this stage.

Day 3 (or Day 2, same day): Implant placement

Placement is under local anaesthesia. You are awake and alert throughout. Single implant placement takes 45–75 minutes. Multiple implants: 90–150 minutes. Full-arch All-on-4 or All-on-6: 2.5–4 hours with rest intervals. The local anaesthetic is comprehensive – most patients are surprised to feel only pressure and vibration, not pain. Post-procedure sensitivity and mild swelling are normal for 48–72 hours.

You leave with a written prescription for anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, written aftercare instructions in English, and a direct contact for the treating clinician. Rest for the remainder of the day. The clinic arranges transport back to your accommodation. Eat something soft before the anaesthetic fully wears off – chao (Vietnamese congee) is available at every corner café in the Old Quarter and is exactly the right texture and temperature for a post-implant meal.

Days 4–5: Early recovery

Soft diet, gentle movement, no alcohol, no smoking. Day 4 is typically the most uncomfortable – the anti-inflammatory peak matters here, so take medication on schedule rather than waiting for discomfort to build. Day 5: most single-implant patients feel substantially better. Full-arch patients may need one extra day of lower activity.

The Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake are well suited to this phase of recovery. Hoan Kiem Lake is flat, shaded in places, and the circuit around the lake (roughly 1.8 km) is a gentle, unhurried walk that many post-surgery patients do on Day 5 or 6 as a first outing. The Huc Bridge – the red lacquered footbridge connecting to Ngoc Son Temple on the lake – is a five-minute detour and one of Hanoi's most photographed spots. No climbing, no exertion; this is a recovery walk, not sightseeing.

Days 5–6: Gentle sightseeing

By Day 5 or 6, most patients are comfortable enough for slow, self-paced exploration. The Old Quarter's 36 guild streets are walkable from most accommodation and offer the right pace for recovery tourism – short distances, frequent café stops, no physical exertion. Avoid the Temple of Literature or Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex if they require standing in a long queue in direct sun.

Food in this phase is straightforward. Pho (soft rice noodles in bone broth), chao (congee), and plain steamed rice with braised tofu or steamed fish are all soft-diet appropriate and widely available for A$2–4 per bowl. Avoid the baguette-based banh mi (crusty bread) and chewy grilled meats until Day 7 minimum.

Days 6–7: Follow-up check and departure clearance

A post-operative review at the clinic (30 minutes) confirms that healing is progressing normally. The treating clinician inspects the surgical site, removes sutures if present (many modern implant protocols use dissolving sutures that do not require removal), and clears you for return travel. You receive the surgical report – implant brand, batch number, dimensions, placement date, torque values – for your home dentist and for your records. Keep a digital copy.

If your return flight is Day 7, this check typically happens Day 6 morning. If you have a full Day 7, use it for a longer walk through the Tay Ho (West Lake) district – a quieter, more residential part of Hanoi that most visitors miss, with excellent cafes and a very different atmosphere from the Old Quarter.

The osseointegration period at home (3–6 months)

After returning home, the titanium implant fixture fuses with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. No clinical intervention is required during this period. Your SmileJet coordinator schedules periodic check-ins and coordinates with your home dentist if any questions arise. The standard window before Trip 2 is 3 months for single implants in healthy bone; 4–6 months for multiple implants, bone-grafted sites, or full-arch restorations. The timing is confirmed by the Hanoi clinic based on your CBCT bone density data, not by a fixed calendar.

Trip 2 (3–5 days): abutment, crown, and final handover

Day 1: Arrival and check-in consultation

The same airport-pickup or hotel-transfer arrangement applies for Trip 2. The arrival consultation (60 minutes) includes a periapical X-ray of the implant site to confirm osseointegration, a clinical examination of the soft tissue around the fixture, and fitting of the abutment – the connector component between the implant and the crown. Abutment fitting is painless. The treating clinician takes digital impressions (or physical impressions for complex full-arch cases) for the dental laboratory.

Days 2–3: Crown fabrication

For single-tooth zirconia crowns, same-day or 48-hour turnaround is standard at most Hanoi clinics. For full-arch zirconia restorations (All-on-4, All-on-6), allow 3–4 days for the laboratory. Use this window as you would any short Hanoi trip – the city rewards slow exploration. The Long Bien Bridge, the Dong Xuan covered market, and the Ceramics Road (Bat Trang village, 30 minutes by taxi) are all viable half-day outings at this stage of recovery when there is no active surgical site.

Day 4: Crown fitting and bite adjustment

The crown is seated, the bite is checked and adjusted until it is correct, and the restoration is polished. This appointment takes 45–90 minutes. You leave with functioning teeth. The treating clinician provides written maintenance instructions – interdental brush sizing, water flosser recommendations, and the review schedule for your home dentist – along with the full implant documentation packet including crown specifications and warranty registration paperwork for both the implant fixture and the crown.

Day 5: Departure

Noi Bai to Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane with one stop (typically Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Bangkok). Total travel time: 11–14 hours depending on routing and connection. Economy class is comfortable by this stage. Most patients book a slightly longer second trip – 5–6 days rather than the minimum 3 – to allow for a rest day in Hanoi before the return journey and to avoid scheduling pressure if the crown requires an additional minor adjustment.
