Why Choose Hospital Veterinario Santamaria in Alajuela?

Hospital Veterinario Santamaria: Alajuela's first 24/7 vet hospital, with emergency, surgery, hospitalization, exotic animals and lab diagnostics.

Hospital Veterinario Santamaria is the first veterinary hospital established in Alajuela, Costa Rica, and one of the most comprehensive animal healthcare facilities in the province. Located approximately 100 meters west and 75 meters south of the Alajuela Municipality, the hospital provides professional veterinary care around the clock, seven days a week, with a team of specialist veterinarians dedicated to the health and wellbeing of each patient. The hospital serves both common domestic animals and exotic species, making it a notable resource for pet owners throughout Alajuela canton and the broader Central Valley.

Emergency Veterinary Services

Hospital Veterinario Santamaria operates a 24-hour, 7-day emergency service, ensuring that pet owners can access urgent veterinary attention at any time of day or night. The hospital also maintains an ambulance service available during daylight hours to assist in the transport of animals requiring urgent care. This level of emergency infrastructure distinguishes Hospital Veterinario Santamaria from standard veterinary practices and positions it as a genuine hospital-grade facility capable of managing critical and life-threatening cases.

Veterinary Laboratory

The hospital operates an advanced on-site veterinary laboratory equipped with modern diagnostic technology for rapid and accurate test results. Laboratory services support the clinical team in diagnosing illness, monitoring treatment progress, and making informed clinical decisions without requiring samples to be sent to external facilities. Fast, in-house diagnostics are particularly important in emergency cases and in the management of hospitalised patients, where timely results directly influence treatment outcomes.

Hospitalization

For animals requiring extended care and monitoring, Hospital Veterinario Santamaria provides dedicated hospitalization facilities designed for the comfort and safety of recovering patients. The hospitalization service is supervised by veterinary staff 24 hours a day, ensuring that hospitalised animals receive continuous monitoring and timely intervention if their condition changes. This inpatient capability supports post-surgical recovery, management of serious illness, and cases requiring ongoing treatment such as intravenous fluid therapy or intensive nursing care.

Specialized Surgeries

The hospital performs specialized surgical procedures including oncological (cancer-related) and orthopedic surgeries, using advanced equipment to deliver high-standard surgical outcomes. The availability of specialist surgery within an Alajuela-based veterinary hospital means that pet owners in the region can access complex surgical care for their animals without needing to travel to San Jose or other larger centers. Soft tissue surgeries are also performed, covering conditions affecting internal organs and body tissues that require precise surgical intervention.

General Veterinary Care and Preventive Medicine

Beyond emergency and specialist services, Hospital Veterinario Santamaria provides a full range of routine and preventive veterinary care. This includes comprehensive physical examinations, vaccinations, parasite prevention and deworming, and ongoing health monitoring for pets at all life stages. Nutritional counseling is available to help owners develop appropriate feeding plans for their animals, supporting long-term health and disease prevention. Regular checkups and continuous health monitoring are offered for patients with chronic conditions or those requiring ongoing management.

Exotic Animals

The hospital's specialist capacity extends to exotic and non-conventional pets, including reptiles, birds, and other species less commonly treated in standard veterinary clinics. The veterinary team has experience and training in exotic animal medicine, and the hospital's facilities are equipped to provide appropriate care for the specific physiological and environmental needs of non-domestic species. This exotic animal service is an additional resource for pet owners in the Alajuela region who keep birds, reptiles, or other uncommon animals.

Grooming and Wellness Services

Hospital Veterinario Santamaria also provides professional grooming services, ensuring that pets can receive both medical and aesthetic care within the same facility. Grooming services contribute to the overall wellbeing of animals by maintaining coat condition, hygiene, and comfort. The availability of grooming alongside clinical services makes the hospital a convenient option for routine pet maintenance as well as healthcare.

Veterinary Care Context in Costa Rica

Costa Rica has a growing and increasingly sophisticated veterinary sector, with professionally trained veterinarians practicing throughout the country. The national regulatory body for veterinary medicine is the Colegio de Medicos Veterinarios de Costa Rica, which sets professional standards and oversees the licensing of veterinary practitioners. Hospital-grade veterinary facilities such as Hospital Veterinario Santamaria represent the highest tier of animal healthcare available in the country, offering capabilities typically found only in larger metropolitan veterinary centers in other markets.

The Central Valley region of Costa Rica, which includes Alajuela, San Jose, Heredia, and Cartago, is the most densely populated area of the country and therefore has the greatest concentration of veterinary practices. Within this competitive environment, Hospital Veterinario Santamaria's 24-hour emergency service, specialist surgical capabilities, and exotic animal expertise position it as a referral destination as well as a primary care provider for pet owners in the Alajuela area.

Booking and Access

Hospital Veterinario Santamaria is located approximately 100 meters west and 75 meters south of the Alajuela Municipality in central Alajuela, easily accessible from across the canton. The hospital can be reached by phone at +506 2440 1010 and via WhatsApp at +506 8427 8484 for consultations, appointment scheduling, and emergency assistance. Further information, updates, and educational content are available through the hospital's social media channels and official website at hospitalveterinariosantamaria.com.

Overall, the service we received from the hospital was very good. Perhaps they could extend the hours for providing pet reports to owners and also the visiting hours, as it gets very crowded. Additionally, they could be a little clearer โ€ฆ

The worst place I could have taken my dog. He's 9 years old, and we took him in for what seemed to be an emergency case of constipation last night because he was in pain. They took x-rays, and now my dog โ€‹โ€‹has injuries to his right front paw and left back paw to the point where he can barely walk due to improper handling during the x-ray. A terrible experience, and we do not recommend them.

Excellent service! Super friendly and attentive; they love animals and care for them like they own them! The prices are very reasonable! I was terrified to neuter my Chihuahua, but here they charged me 45,000 colones for the inhalation neutering procedure, and everything went perfectly. My Chihuahua doesn't even know what happened! He's doing great, and they were so kind! Thank you so much! At another vet, Mr. Patitas, they charged me 50,000 colones just for my Chihuahua's blood tests and 35,000 colones for the neutering, plus another 58,000 colones for the inhalation procedure! That's a total of 90,000 colones just to neuter him! Just look at how much money I saved!
