Why Choose ASEMBIS Clinic in Alajuela?

ASEMBIS Clinic in Alajuela is a Costa Rican social enterprise offering affordable dental, medical specialty, optical, and diagnostic imaging services.

ASEMBIS Clinic (Asociacion de Empresas y Particulares) is part of the ASEMBIS network, a Costa Rican social enterprise operating clinics and optical centers throughout the country with a mission to provide high-quality health services at fair and accessible prices. The Alajuela location is situated between Calle Central and Avenida 2 in the heart of Alajuela city, making it conveniently accessible for residents of Alajuela canton and visitors to the area. ASEMBIS combines dental care, medical specialist consultations, optical services, and diagnostic imaging under a single healthcare model oriented toward affordability and quality.

Social Enterprise Model

ASEMBIS operates as a social enterprise, meaning its primary mission is to make quality healthcare accessible to a broad cross-section of the Costa Rican population rather than to maximize profit. The organization reinvests revenues into maintaining its facilities, expanding services, and keeping consultation fees at a level accessible to working families and individuals who may not have access to expensive private insurance plans. This model has made ASEMBIS one of the most recognizable and trusted healthcare networks in Costa Rica, with a presence in multiple provinces and a consistent focus on combining technology, qualified professionals, and reasonable pricing.

Dental Services

Dental care (odontologia) is one of the core service areas at ASEMBIS. The dental department provides a range of general and specialist dental treatments, including preventive care, restorative dentistry, extractions, and cosmetic procedures. Dental care at ASEMBIS is priced to be accessible relative to other private dental providers in Costa Rica, making it a popular choice for patients seeking quality dental treatment without the cost of a premium private dental clinic. Both children and adult patients are seen by qualified dental professionals operating under the standards of the Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Costa Rica.

Medical Specialties

ASEMBIS offers consultations across a wide range of medical specialties, enabling patients to access specialist-level care within the same affordable healthcare framework. Specialties available include cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gynecology, orthopedics, otolaryngology (ENT), urology, peripheral vascular medicine, physical therapy (rehabilitation), nutrition and dietetics, psychology, speech therapy, and respiratory therapy. This breadth of specialist coverage means that patients can address diverse health concerns across ASEMBIS locations without needing to seek separate specialist providers, streamlining care and reducing overall healthcare costs.

Optical Services

In addition to medical and dental care, ASEMBIS operates optical centers (opticas) that provide eye examinations, vision correction prescriptions, and a range of spectacle frames and lenses. The optical service follows the same value proposition as the broader ASEMBIS network: professional eye care and optical products at prices more accessible than many private optical retailers. Patients requiring vision correction can have their eyes examined and obtain prescription glasses within the ASEMBIS network in a single visit.

Diagnostic Imaging

ASEMBIS clinics are equipped with diagnostic imaging technology supporting a range of common medical investigations. Available imaging services include X-rays, ultrasounds, mammography for breast cancer screening, and bone densitometry for the assessment of bone mineral density. These diagnostic services are available to patients of ASEMBIS specialist consultations as well as to walk-in patients requiring specific investigations, supporting faster diagnostic workups within the same affordable network.

Location and Access

The ASEMBIS Clinic in Alajuela is centrally located between Calle Central and Avenida 2, within easy walking distance of central Alajuela and accessible by public transport from across the canton. Alajuela is also the home of Juan Santamaria International Airport, Costa Rica's main air gateway, making the ASEMBIS Alajuela clinic a practical option for both local residents and international visitors requiring healthcare services in the area. Full information on services, pricing, and appointments is available through the ASEMBIS official website at asembis.org.

ASEMBIS Across Costa Rica

While this listing covers the Alajuela location, ASEMBIS operates a network of clinics and optical centers in multiple cities and regions throughout Costa Rica, including in San Jose, Heredia, Cartago, and other provincial centers. Each location offers a consistent standard of services and pricing under the ASEMBIS brand, making the organization one of the most geographically distributed private healthcare networks in the country. Patients who establish care at one ASEMBIS location may access services at other branches, supporting continuity of care for patients who move or travel within Costa Rica.

The organization's approach to combining dental, medical, and optical services under a single brand and pricing structure reflects a philosophy of integrated, accessible healthcare. Rather than requiring patients to navigate separate providers for different health needs, ASEMBIS positions itself as a one-stop healthcare destination where the full spectrum of routine health maintenance -- from dental cleanings and eye examinations to specialist cardiology consultations and physiotherapy sessions -- can be addressed affordably and conveniently.

Choosing ASEMBIS for Dental Tourism

Costa Rica is an established destination for international patients seeking affordable dental care, particularly for visitors from the United States and Canada where dental treatment costs are significantly higher. ASEMBIS Alajuela's location near Juan Santamaria International Airport makes it a practical choice for dental tourists arriving in Costa Rica who wish to combine dental treatment with the country's well-known nature and tourism offerings. Procedures such as dental cleanings, fillings, extractions, and cosmetic dental work at Costa Rican clinics like ASEMBIS are available at a fraction of comparable costs in North America, even when factoring in travel expenses.

Terrible customer service and rude attitude from the receptionists. Honestly, they don't even deserve one star, but I have to leave a review, so why bother? The medical care is even worse; they barely pay attention when you speak to them, and if they do, it's begrudgingly.

I went to Clínica Asembis for the extraction of a damaged tooth, and the experience was very negative. During the procedure, the dentist failed to perform the extraction correctly and instead ended up damaging a tooth that wasn't the one that needed treatment. Since then, I've had constant pain, difficulty opening my mouth, and discomfort when biting. It's been almost a week, and the symptoms persist, which is not normal after a dental procedure. Furthermore, the tooth that originally needed treatment wasn't addressed. I believe there was a lack of care and professionalism in the handling of my case. I do not recommend this service and suggest that other patients research it thoroughly before seeking treatment here. I am seeking evaluation at another medical center due to the complications that arose after this experience.

Deplorable service. They're worse than the public health insurance company, and that's saying something. I had an appointment at 10:00, arrived promptly at 9:30, and wasn't seen until 11:40. It's an absolute disregard for patients' time and trust. They charge upfront, but when you complain about the delay, they come up with the excuse that "ophthalmology takes time." That argument would be believable if it weren't for the fact that there were even people who arrived after me and were seen first. That's not efficiency, it's disorganization and a lack of respect. You're paid to save patients time, not waste it. If we're talking about quality of service, you're terrible. I've already filed a complaint with the insurance company and also left a negative review on Google, because I know I'm not the only one affected. Reputation is built on respect and organization, not on lame excuses.

They're always behind schedule in every specialty: the doctor is new, there are system problems, the doctor hasn't arrived yet. They're like a public hospital. The facility is terrible, the receptionists are awful, and the supervisor, Roberto Portuguez, is terrible too. After waiting for over an hour, while others had been waiting for two hours, they told us we had to come back another day. I want to make it clear that this is NOT the first time this has happened. I will never return to this facility; their administration and scheduling are terrible.

I bought some glasses, they didn't last long because they put the temple loose and now I sent them back and they take 2 weeks to return them to me and one if I need the glasses urgently

It's unbelievable that they don't ask customers if they have private health insurance, and sometimes their own employees don't even know if Asembis has an agreement with Assa or Palig. For the love of God, please provide better training for your employees; it benefits everyone!

Terrible service. They make you make an appointment and then leave you waiting up to 45 minutes past the appointment time because they attend to people on a first-come, first-served basis. The question is, why make the appointment at all?

Irresponsibility. A terrible experience with the dental secretary. He reschedules appointments at will, offering no solutions and not even an apology. He simply says, "I'm going to cancel it." They lost a patient and a bad recommendation for anyone who asks me about ASEMBIS services. I was a patient until that day.

They're not serious. They give you an appointment time, you arrive, and the doctors are just wasting time, running around and not seeing anyone. There's a huge delay, and when they finally do see you, they try to rush you out as if you weren't paying for the consultation. It feels worse than going to the CCSS hospital.
