ly between the adjacent teeth. A temporary crown was placed during this phase and was expected to remain stable for several months until my next scheduled visit. However, the temporary crown fell off within two months, and I had to seek care from a local dentist in the U.S. and pay out of pocket to address the issue. These costs were not compensated, despite the crown being part of the ongoing implant treatment plan. In addition, I was later informed that the temporary crown was placing mechanical pressure on the implant, which may have contributed to stress on the site during the healing phase. A permanent crown was placed approximately six months later, without an extended healing period. Within a few months after the permanent crown was placed, the implant failed due to progressive bone loss around the site, which I was later told was related to implant positioning and bone response. The failed implant required removal and replacement. During planning for the second implant, I was initially informed that I would need to pay again for a new crown, despite the implant being under warranty. It took extensive negotiation before the crown replacement was eventually included. Unfortunately, the second implant also failed early. After this failure, I was informed that while the implant itself remained under warranty, I would now be required to pay out of pocket for bone grafting in order to proceed with the third implant attempt and travel at least 3 times with each trip around 5 days. After two early failures at the same site, I declined further implant treatment based on the increasing biological risk. Over the course of these two implant attempts, I made five separate trips to Costa Rica, each requiring approximately five days of travel and recovery time, totaling nearly one full month away from home and work. Flights alone cost around $400 per trip, not including lost income. Communication throughout the process was usually delayed, taking 24 hours or more during critical decision-making periods. In addition to the implants, I also had eight crowns placed at this clinic. I was not consulted in advance about tooth shape or design preferences, and I only saw the final result after their manufacturing. Nearly two years later, my gums around several crowns are still adjusting and healing. Other patients from this office had the same situation. While the facilities were modern and staff generally polite in person, my experience made it very clear that dental tourism warranties have serious limitations. Even when an implant is “under warranty,” additional costs may still apply after failures (such as crowns after the first failure, emergency care for failed temporaries, and bone grafting after the second failure). Anyone considering this clinic should understand that if complications occur, the true cost is not just financial. It involves: MULTIPLE INTERNATIONAL TRIPS, EXTENDED TIME AWAY FROM WORK, UNPLANNED LOCAL DENTAL EXPENSES, ONGOING HEALTH UNCERTAINTY, and SIGNIFICANT STRESS. All with NO GUARANTEE OF A SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME. Unless someone has complete flexibility to travel repeatedly between countries, absorb unexpected out-of-pocket costs, and accept the physical and emotional burden that can come with complications, I would strongly recommend carefully reconsidering dental tourism for complex procedures like implants. I am sharing this so others can make a fully informed decision before committing. As a note, I later consulted with DDS Dental, another clinic in San José, and had a very positive experience with their professional communication, treatment and fair pricing. Highly recommend to check them out.

Most patients find that the total savings far outweigh their expenses, even considering unexpected expenses of a possible return trip. We offer clear warranties for our dental implants and crowns.
