nd xrays from home so there was a reasonable understanding of what I needed without having seen me yet. Once we agreed suitable flight times and length of stay (4 nights) I paid the flight costs up front and started to look forward to getting my much needed treatment. A cock-up on my part with my passport delayed us slightly but flights were rearranged promptly and without fuss. (Make sure you have 150 days on your passport otherwise you won't be able to travel!) When we arrived in Istanbul we were transferred to a beautiful hotel (Polat Renaissance) In the morning transport took us to the clinic. Everything was spotless and beautifully decorated with a large waiting area. After an initial scan and photos it was up to the surgeon to decide best treatment so we had to wait a while for that. Once he had been consulted we then had a discussion about my treatment plan. Due to significant bone loss I needed to have better implants than those quoted and also a titanium bar. This aligned with my research so I was not too surprised but it did result in a c50% increase in price. This was still significantly less than the UK so once I had agreed we paid the costs for the first visit there and then. After some lunch at a nearby cafe (delicious! ) I was taken in to surgery. Two and a half hours later 19 extractions and 10 implants were completed. The process was done efficiently and with care and clear explanations given at key points. No pain at all due to plenty of local anesthesia but there is no escaping the sounds of the surgery, drills, crunching etc ! Another scan and then we were transferred back back the hotel to rest. All told we were at the clinic for around 9.5 hours (excl lunch), so there was quite a bit of waiting around but you are with others and everyone chats about what they are having done. Painkillers, mouthwash and antibiotics ensured I was able to self care for the next day whilst I recovered. Pain was not too bad, more like tenderness and bruised feeling. The day after that I returned for internal and external scans for the temporary teeth to be made. This was fast tracked so we could make sure everything was fine before travel home the following day. After a trip to the bazaar we returned at 4.30 and I received my new temporary teeth! Wow, what a difference to have a set of teeth that aren't wobbling and painful! ! Yes it does feel strange and will take some getting used to but I am very happy and these are just the temporary ones! We will return in three months for the final permanent teeth to be made and fitted. These are just whilst the implants fuse with my bone.
