What the day of your whitening appointment looks like

Clinics differ, but an in-chair session usually follows these steps:

• Check. A brief look for decay or cracked fillings that need fixing first.
• Clean. Whitening works best on clean teeth. Scaling (cạo vôi răng) is 300,000 to 500,000 VND at Tri Hao and 200,000 to 300,000 VND at Phu Quoc Luxury; ask whether it is included or extra.
• Protect and record. A gum barrier and lip retractor go on, and the starting shade is recorded so you have a before reference.
• Whiten. Gel is applied and activated by the light, usually in several short cycles.
• Compare. The gel is rinsed off and the new shade is compared with the starting one.
• Aftercare. You may be given a desensitising gel and instructions for the next 48 hours.

Who is a good candidate for whitening

Whitening works on natural tooth enamel. It does not lighten ceramic, porcelain or composite. That limits who benefits and sets the order of treatment if you are planning more than one.

• Good candidates. Natural teeth stained by coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco or age, in generally good health with no untreated decay.
• Poor candidates. People with many crowns or veneers on their front teeth, because the restorations stay their original shade while the natural teeth lighten. • No shade record before and after. Without one, you cannot see what you paid for.
