Dental care for expats in Cuenca

Most writing about dental care in Ecuador is aimed at someone flying in for a week. If you live in Cuenca, the calculation is different, and mostly in your favour.

What living here changes.

Everything that is difficult for a visitor is straightforward for a resident. Orthodontics is the clearest example. Invisalign at $3,300 to $3,600 and fixed braces at $1,400 to $1,600 both run over many months with regular reviews. For someone visiting that is a serious logistical problem. For someone living here it is a normal course of treatment.

The same applies to implants. The two-visit sequence with months of healing in between is an obstacle for a traveller and a non-issue if you are already in the city.

The routine care nobody writes about.

Preventive dentistry is where residents save the most, because it is cheap enough to actually keep up with. A regular cleaning is published at $20. A deep clean with scaling and root planing is $30 to $50.

At those figures the sensible thing is to go regularly rather than wait for something to hurt. Gum disease left alone is also the main reason implants fail later, so the cheap appointment protects the expensive one.

Emergencies.

The thing that unsettles people most about moving abroad is not planned treatment, it is the abscess at the weekend. Insurance and public cover.

Ecuador has a public social security health system and there are private insurers operating locally. What either covers for dental treatment varies, and public reporting on the detail is inconsistent, so we are not going to tell you what you are entitled to.

Confirm your own cover directly with the insurer or the institution before you assume a treatment is paid for. Assuming and being wrong is expensive.

Getting a second opinion.
