My girlfriend and I went to get a checkup today in the midafternoon. They were extremely professional and did a fantastic job. In terms of my own experience, they cleaned my teeth so well, the before and after difference was truely astonishing. All the staff were very understanding of my girlfriend's nerves as English is her second language. They allowed me to sit in the same room as her during the procedure, which I really appreciated. Would recommend their dental practice to my friends.

Got a Groupon for a cleaning and xrays. The doctor was very nice but spent barely any time cleaning my teeth. Very dissatisfied by my visit and won't be coming back.

However, the time spent on teeth cleaning is proportionate to the amount of calculus that needs to be removed from the teeth and gums. Some patients have a lot of calculus and we need to spend a lot of time cleaning this away from their teeth and gums. Other patients only have a little bit of calculus and less time is needed to clean their teeth and gums. Aggressive cleaning of healthy tooth structure and gum tissue is not required and can cause unnecessary damage.

I bought the groupon voucher to clean and xray my teeth. After checkup, The dentist suggest that I need filling. So i did cleaning plus filling. My fault was I didn't check his work straight after he finished. Until 2 weeks after the clean, I found out that some of my bottom tooth was not cleaned properly and still cover in tartar that is visible. That dentist fixed it, but he did believe that 1 week will build up that much and believe he would check his work before he finished. Believe or not, for years, I have been checked up every 6 months, and to build up that much tartar, it would take 5-6 months. It's impossible that 2 weeks will build up that much and visible tartar... I thought the deal was a nice way to see if I liked their studio, but I think I should come back to my old dentist where I will pay full price but did an awesome job. I wasted my money trying a new dentist. 0 star if there is an option

Response from the owner 6 years agoWe are sorry that we have made you feel this way about us. However, we have tried to do everything we can for you. After your treatment at your first appointment, we asked you if you were happy with the result of your treatment to which you said you were after checking it. When you called us to say you noticed some tartar on your lower front teeth not a few days immediately after your appointment but nearly 4 weeks after, we still got you in straight away for a free review appointment. When gave you another teeth cleaning for free even though the tartar you complained about was new tartar formed after your first appointment and not left behind by us. New tartar is whiter, softer and easier to remove as it is immature in formation, compared to tartar that has been present for months which tends to be greyer in colour due to staining from food and drink, and harder to remove due to being more mineralised by saliva over time. As discussed with you already, new tartar can form on the teeth within days of removal, with the lower front teeth particularly susceptible due to them being near the salivary glands under the tongue, with minerals from saliva hardening plaque to form tartar more quickly than other areas of the mouth. Less than optimal teeth brushing and flossing obviously makes new tartar form faster.

I'm the kind of person who gets cleanings every six months at a nice dentist office, flosses twice a day, and brushes after every meal! I take care of my teeth! I was looking for a new dentist because I moved overseas. I normally go to a nice dentist in Canada - my dental hygienist in Canada would spend roughly 35-50 minutes cleaning my teeth very thoroughly and bill me by the amount of time it took them, based on how much work my teeth needed. Then the dentist would come in and check everything out just for a few minutes and leave. First Dental Studio was my first dentist I tried in Australia, and it was a hugely different (and disappointing) experience than what I am used to in Canada. I regret going with them. I used a coupon - $99 for cleaning + xrays (but I didn't get the xrays cause I'm pregnant but still paid the full amount as it was a good deal.) I gladly would have paid full price for an actually good cleaning. The dentist spent a total of SEVEN MINUTES cleaning my teeth. He cleaned them himself rather than a hygenist. I left his office fifteen minutes after my appointment started (he spent the rest of the time he wasn't cleaning trying to sell me on dental things I don't need - I have nice teeth). My teeth still felt super dirty and they were covered in plaque. He only polished like literally three of my teeth, he spent all of ten seconds on that part. I thought the deal was a nice way to see if I liked their studio- and if I did, would have paid full price as a regular client - but instead, I left feeling like I got scammed. I wasted $99 on my teeth which were not any cleaner when I left and now I still need a cleaning. I NEVER leave negative reviews as I know the impact they can have on a business, but I have thought about this for months and have decided to leave one.

Response from the owner 7 years agoWe are sorry that we have made you feel this way about us and our treatment. Many patients have come to see us with this promotion and we have not had a problem with anyone else. At the start of your appointment we explained to you that there are certain limitations with your treatment due to your pregnancy. We should not take x-rays on pregnant women unless absolutely necessary to treat an emergency condition to avoid radiation to the mother and the developing baby and the possible negative side effects of the radiation. Acidic vapours from nausea or direct acidic content from the digestive tract from vomiting due to morning sickness can damage the teeth and gums and these need to be cleaned and polished more gently and for less time than you are accustomed to. The acid also dissolves calculus on the teeth so there is usually less hard buildup than normal to clean off so this should not be an issue. An increased gagging response due to the nausea as well as an inability to lie back much and for a long time due to the baby bump also limits the amount of time we can be in the mouth. An increase in pregnancy hormones causes increase in blood flow and a lot more gum bleeding even if they are healthy and this again limits the amount of polishing we can do as blood will be smeared everywhere. The acidic damage to the teeth and gums and the increase in gum bleeding may also make the teeth and gums feel less clean and healthy even after professional cleaning. You were happy to accept these limitations at your appointment. It is surprising that you now view our specifically modified treatment to accommodate your pregnancy as a lack of effort on our part. Our long discussion with you about this was not an attempt to sell you anything but simply to provide you necessary information regarding pregnancy and oral health. We normally spend 45 minutes with all new patients to give us enough time to do a full dental exam, 2 digital x-rays to check between the teeth where we cannot see with the naked eye, ultrasonic cleaning, polishing and preventive fluoride treatment to strengthen the teeth. We spend a lot of time discussing your oral health, showing you the x-rays, telling you what you are doing well or not so well and how to improve this and what treatment may be needed if any. The time spent on teeth cleaning depends on the amount of buildup on the teeth. Patients who have good oral hygiene and see the dentist every 6 months as recommended have less buildup on their teeth and gums and need less time with cleaning. Cleaning the teeth more than they need or too aggressively can cause damage to the enamel and teeth sensitivity, especially to cold things. Some patients have poor oral hygiene and haven’t been to the dentist in ages, have a lot of buildup and need more time with cleaning, sometimes even a 2nd appointment to give enough time. A detailed treatment plan with item numbers and quotes as well as information sheets regarding any treatment needed are provided at the end of the appointment for you to consider. You were provided treatment in this manner except for the limitations discussed and our records show you were treated for 30 minutes which is appropriate given there were items we could not do due to the pregnancy. The philosophy at our practice is that your dentist looks after you in all aspects of your oral health. The dentist will do everything for you that they are qualified to do and won’t palm you off to a hygienist or someone else while they see another patient. Many dental practices use dental hygienists who are paid at a lower rate compared to dentists to do teeth cleaning to free up the dentist who is more qualified and further trained to do other more complex treatments. There is nothing wrong with either way of practicing dentistry. There are many practices that use each model. Our patients appreciate having their dentist look after them for everything that they are qualified to help with.

Dr Vincent Wan and the team at First Dental Studio is wonderful. I have been going to see them for the past 8 years for my regular dental check ups and I have never been this loyal to a dentist.
