Field notes from Portugal

We've toured the clinics, priced the procedures, and watched the waiting rooms. Here's what we found on the ground — and what we'd tell a friend considering the trip.

Avg. clinic rating

Portugal is one of Western Europe's most attractive dental tourism destinations, offering EU-regulated clinical standards at prices 30-50% below France, Germany, or the UK. SmileJet has verified 68 clinics across Portugal's two main hubs: Porto (38 clinics) and Lisbon (30 clinics). Partner clinics maintain a collective 4.5 average rating across 3,643 patient reviews, with top-rated practices including Atlantic Dental Center (Lisbon), Clínica Sérgio Barreto, Medway Clínica Dentária Gaia, KAVI Art Clinic, and Foz Dental Clinic in Porto. Portuguese dentists train at the Universidade do Porto Faculdade de Medicina Dentária, Universidade de Lisboa Faculdade de Medicina Dentária, and other top European schools, and leading clinics use Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Neodent, and IPS E.max materials. Portugal combines excellent weather, rich culture, and a warm welcome — increasingly popular with UK patients post-Brexit for its visa-free 90-day EU access. [1]

Where the clinics are

Most of the quality concentration in Portugal sits in two to three cities. Each has its own character, its own airport, and its own mix of specialisms. Start by picking the city.

Excellent! Every step of the clinic's communication, from scheduling the appointment to paying for the procedure, was flawless! My child had his first dental treatment—fear- and pain-free. He left happy and satisfied! Thank you to the doctors for their patienc...

What's different about dentistry here

The training

Senior clinicians at our Portugal-partner clinics typically hold international fellowships (ICOI, Pankey, Kois) alongside domestic credentials. We verify each one, and link them on every clinic dossier.

The equipment

CBCT, digital impressions, and in-house milling are standard at our top-tier clinics. Materials are imported — Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Ivoclar. Our audits photograph lot numbers and expiration dates.

The logistics

English-speaking coordinators, airport pickup, hotel coordination, and post-op follow-up via WhatsApp are table stakes. If a clinic doesn't do these things, they don't make our list.

The follow-up

We keep touch for 12 months post-treatment. Any clinic that drops communication with a patient for more than 72 hours gets flagged and eventually dropped. Patient support is the one non-negotiable.

Frequently asked

01

Is dental work in Portugal safe?

Yes. Portugal is an EU member state and Portuguese dentistry is regulated by the Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas (Portuguese Dental Association) with strict EU clinical standards. SmileJet partner clinics hold a 4.5 average rating across 3,600+ reviews. Portuguese dentists train at top European medical schools and must meet EU professional competency requirements.
02

How much can I save on dental work in Portugal?

Typical savings versus UK, French, or German prices are 30-50%. Single dental implants cost EUR €900-€1,500 in Portugal vs £2,400 UK or €3,500 Germany. Porcelain veneers EUR €400-€700 per tooth. Zirconia crowns EUR €350-€600. All-on-4 full-arch implants run EUR €8,500-€12,500 per arch vs £15,000 UK.
03

Porto or Lisbon — which is better for dental tourism?

Porto (38 clinics) is Portugal's traditional dental hub, with a concentration of family-operated premium clinics in the Ribeira, Cedofeita, and Foz districts. Lisbon (30 clinics) offers slightly more international-facing infrastructure and easier flight connections. Porto is generally 10-15% cheaper than Lisbon for equivalent treatments. Both cities offer world-class cuisine, culture, and architecture.
04

Do I need a visa to visit Portugal for dental treatment?

Portugal is an EU and Schengen Area member state. EU/EEA citizens enter with just a national ID. UK (post-Brexit), US, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day Schengen period. No special medical visa required. Passport must be valid 3+ months beyond departure.
05

How long do I need to stay in Portugal for dental work?

Veneers and crowns typically need 5-7 days across 2-3 appointments. Dental implants require 7-10 days for placement, with a return visit 4-6 months later for the final crown. Teeth whitening and cleaning are same-day. All-on-4 full-arch implants take 10-14 days. Many patients combine treatment with Portuguese cultural tourism — the Douro Valley, Sintra, the Algarve.
06

Do Portuguese dentists speak English?

All SmileJet partner clinics in Portugal have English-speaking dentists and patient coordinators. English fluency is standard in Portugal's dental tourism sector, particularly in Porto and Lisbon. Many Portuguese dentists also speak French, Spanish, or Italian. Treatment plans, consent forms, and aftercare instructions are provided in English for international patients.
07

What implant brands are used by Portuguese clinics?

Top Portuguese clinics use Straumann (Switzerland), Nobel Biocare (Sweden), Neodent (Brazil/Straumann Group — particularly common given Portuguese-Brazilian ties), MIS (Israel), and BioHorizons (US). IPS E.max (Ivoclar Vivadent), Zirkonzahn, and BruxZir are standard for crowns and veneers. Every clinic provides material certificates.
08

Why is Portugal increasingly popular with UK dental tourists post-Brexit?

Post-Brexit, UK patients lost EU healthcare entitlements (EHIC/GHIC reciprocity is limited) and face rising domestic dental costs. Portugal offers EU-regulated clinical standards at 30-50% savings, easy visa-free travel, short 2.5-hour flights from UK, English-speaking clinical staff, and proven infrastructure for British patients. Unlike cheaper destinations, Portugal offers familiar cultural/climate appeal for British retirees and leisure travellers.
09

What's the best time of year to visit Portugal?

April to October offers ideal weather — pleasant spring (April-May), warm summer (June-September, can be hot inland), and mild autumn (October). Lisbon is slightly warmer than Porto year-round. May and September are arguably the perfect months — warm but not crowded. Winter (December-February) is mild but rainy, especially in Porto. Dental clinics operate year-round.
