Why Choose Konoba Dalmacija in Zadar?

Traditional Dalmatian konoba in Zadar's old town with 70+ years of history, a Roman-era garden courtyard, and daily menu.

Konoba Dalmacija is a traditional Croatian tavern located at Ulica Ivana T. Zanottija 4 in the heart of Zadar's historic old town. With a continuous history spanning more than 70 years at the same location, Konoba Dalmacija is one of the oldest and most established dining institutions in Zadar -- a genuine neighborhood fixture that has welcomed generations of locals, business diners, and visitors in search of authentic Dalmatian cooking and a warm, unhurried atmosphere.

What makes Konoba Dalmacija particularly remarkable is its physical setting. The building sits on the foundations of an ancient Roman temple, and the original stone blocks from the temple structure can be seen within the konoba's inner garden courtyard. Dining in this green, sheltered outdoor space -- surrounded by two-thousand-year-old stone -- offers an experience that is unique even by the standards of a city as historically rich as Zadar.

Traditional Dalmatian Cuisine

The kitchen at Konoba Dalmacija centers on the traditional food culture of the Dalmatian region. Dalmatian cooking is characterized by its simplicity, its reliance on fresh, high-quality local ingredients, and its deep connection to the land and sea of the eastern Adriatic coast. Dishes are prepared with respect for seasonal availability, with the weekly menu incorporating locally sourced ingredients at the peak of their freshness.

Typical Dalmatian konoba dishes include slow-cooked meat preparations such as peka -- meat and vegetables slow-cooked under a bell-shaped lid buried in embers -- as well as grilled fish and seafood from the Adriatic, pasticada (slow-braised beef in a wine and vegetable sauce), lamb dishes prepared in the traditional island style, and a range of pasta and risotto preparations using local seafood. Starters commonly feature cured meats, local cheeses, anchovies, olives, and freshly baked bread with olive oil -- the hallmarks of a Dalmatian antipasto spread.

The menu changes and evolves regularly, with weekly specials (marendes) prepared from seasonal ingredients adding variety and reflecting what is freshest and most available at any given time of year. This approach to a living, seasonal menu is characteristic of konobas that take their culinary identity seriously and maintain a direct connection to local producers and markets.

Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Konoba Dalmacija is open seven days a week from 08:00 to 23:00, accommodating a full day of dining from morning coffee and breakfast through to late evening dinner. The broad opening window makes it equally suited to a quick business lunch, a leisurely family dinner, or a relaxed weekend meal in the courtyard garden. The konoba's versatility -- appealing equally to business professionals, families with children, and tourists -- reflects both the quality of its cooking and the welcoming, adaptable character of its hospitality.

Business lunch options are available for those working in or near the old town who want a satisfying, properly prepared midday meal in a setting that is a cut above the ordinary. The combination of good food, courtyard garden seating, and proximity to the main pedestrian areas of the old town makes it a practical and pleasant choice for working lunches and client dinners alike.

Events and Private Dining

Konoba Dalmacija caters for private events, celebrations, and wedding receptions, offering the konoba's distinctive setting and kitchen for groups who want a memorable and characterful venue in Zadar's old town. Catering services are also available. The garden courtyard, with its Roman stone backdrop, provides a genuinely special environment for occasions where the setting itself is part of the experience.

Facilities and Practical Information

The konoba offers outside seating in its celebrated garden courtyard as well as indoor dining with air conditioning. Free WiFi, a smoking area, and a pet-friendly policy are available for guests. Takeaway orders can be placed through the Glovo delivery app for customers who want to enjoy Konoba Dalmacija's food at home or at their accommodation. Payment is accepted by cash, contactless, Mastercard, and Visa.

Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly during the busy summer months when demand for old-town restaurant seating in Zadar is high. The restaurant can be reached by phone at +385 23 633 459 or by email at [email protected]. Konoba Dalmacija is also active on Facebook and Instagram, where the team shares updates on seasonal menus, events, and the daily life of one of Zadar's most beloved dining institutions.

Wine and Drinks

A wine list featuring Dalmatian and Croatian wines accompanies the food menu, with selections drawn from the region's well-regarded wine-producing areas including the Zadar hinterland, the islands of the Dalmatian archipelago, and the broader Dalmatian coast. Indigenous Croatian grape varieties -- red Plavac Mali, white Posip, and Grk among others -- are integral to any serious Dalmatian wine offer, and a konoba of Dalmacija's standing and heritage can be expected to curate its cellar with the same care it brings to its kitchen. A cocktail menu adds a contemporary dimension for guests who prefer aperitivos and long drinks alongside or instead of wine. The full drinks offer -- jelovnik, vinska karta, and kokteli -- is accessible both in-store and through the konoba's website.

For visitors to Zadar in search of a dining experience that combines genuine historical depth with the honest, produce-driven cooking that defines the best of Dalmatian food culture, Konoba Dalmacija represents one of the most compelling choices in the city. Over seven decades of continuous operation at the same location, in a building rooted literally in ancient stone, is a statement that speaks for itself -- and the kitchen, the courtyard, and the welcome have clearly given people reason to keep coming back.

A lovely, quiet, and shady garden restaurant nestled between Zadar's tourist hotspots. The food is excellent, especially the fish dishes, which are delicious and plentiful. The prices are very reasonable; for example, a large fish platter with smelt, mussels, and shrimp costs €20.
