Sydney Dental Hospital is a major publicly funded dental institution serving the state of New South Wales, Australia. Located at 2 Chalmers Street in Surry Hills, Sydney, Sydney Dental Hospital occupies a prominent position opposite the entrance to Central Railway Station, making it highly accessible to patients throughout Sydney and surrounding regions. As a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Sydney's dental school, Sydney Dental Hospital combines clinical excellence, professional education, and commitment to public oral health. The hospital is part of the Sydney Local Health District and operates as one of two major providers of public oral health services in NSW, serving diverse patient populations including children, seniors, people with special care needs, and vulnerable populations.
Sydney Dental Hospital provides comprehensive dental services spanning general dentistry, specialist treatment, and educational training. The institution operates both as a primary care facility and as a referral centre for complex cases throughout New South Wales. General dental services are available to eligible children and adults, with specialist treatment provided statewide across multiple disciplines. The hospital maintains five community oral health clinics located in Canterbury, Concord, Croydon, Marrickville, and at the main Sydney Dental Hospital site in Surry Hills, extending access to dental care across the greater Sydney region. This integrated network of services ensures that NSW residents throughout Surry Hills, Sydney, and the broader state have access to quality dental treatment regardless of socioeconomic status or geographic location.
Sydney Dental Hospital excels across all major dental specialties, providing statewide referral services for complex cases. Paediatric dentistry specialists care for children's dental health, ensuring positive early experiences and developing healthy oral habits. Orthodontic services straighten teeth and correct bite problems for patients throughout NSW. Periodontal treatment addresses gum disease, a critical component of overall oral and systemic health. Oral surgery and diagnostic imaging capabilities allow the hospital to manage tooth extractions, bone grafting, and complex surgical cases. Prosthodontics specialists create custom dentures and dental prostheses for patients requiring tooth replacement. Endodontics specialists perform root canal therapy for teeth with damaged or infected pulp tissue. Oral pathology services include diagnosis of oral diseases and lesions. Oral and maxillofacial surgery manages complex surgical cases involving the mouth, jaws, and face. Implantology services provide dental implant treatment for appropriate candidates. The Special Care Dental Unit at Sydney Dental Hospital specialises in treating patients with chronic mental health conditions and elderly patients who require modified care approaches. This comprehensive specialty array makes Sydney Dental Hospital in Surry Hills a tertiary referral centre for complex dental problems affecting residents throughout NSW.
Sydney Dental Hospital integrates modern diagnostic and treatment technology with clinical excellence. Advanced imaging systems including digital radiography, panoramic imaging, and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) enable precise diagnosis and treatment planning. Surgical facilities are equipped for complex oral and maxillofacial procedures. Prosthodontic laboratories support fabrication of high-quality dentures and prostheses. The hospital's teaching role ensures that clinical facilities meet university accreditation standards and provide optimal environments for student education. Infection control and sterilisation protocols at Sydney Dental Hospital meet strict government and international standards, ensuring patient safety. The Surry Hills location provides convenient access via public transport, with close proximity to Central Railway Station, making the facility accessible to patients throughout Sydney and NSW. The modern facilities at Sydney Dental Hospital reflect its commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous improvement in patient care delivery.
Several compelling reasons make Sydney Dental Hospital an excellent choice for dental care in Surry Hills and across NSW. First, the hospital's public funding structure means treatment costs are significantly lower than private alternatives, with eligible patients receiving subsidised or fully covered care based on their circumstances. Second, Sydney Dental Hospital offers unparalleled access to specialist dentists and complex care within NSW; if your general dentist refers you for specialist treatment, the hospital's statewide network ensures you can access expertise regardless of location. Third, the teaching hospital status means students and residents provide supervised care under faculty oversight, offering patients quality treatment while contributing to professional education. Fourth, the Special Care Dental Unit provides dignified, compassionate dental care to vulnerable populations, including those with mental health conditions and elderly patients. Fifth, the convenient Surry Hills location near Central Railway Station provides exceptional accessibility for patients across Sydney and regional NSW. Finally, the hospital's comprehensive service network across five community clinics ensures that residents throughout the greater Sydney region have access to public dental care.
At Sydney Dental Hospital, patients experience a professional, evidence-based approach to dental care. The hospital treats a diverse patient population and has developed protocols to ensure respectful, dignified care for all individuals. General dental care is available without referral for eligible children under 18 years old and for vulnerable adult populations, including indigenous Australians and those holding a Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card. The referral process for adults who don't meet direct access criteria is straightforward, typically involving consultation with a general dentist who can refer to Sydney Dental Hospital for specialist treatment. Staff at Sydney Dental Hospital understand the diverse needs of Sydney's population and provide culturally sensitive, respectful care. The teaching environment means that patients may be treated by dental students under faculty supervision, which many patients appreciate as it provides quality care at reduced cost whilst supporting professional education. For those requiring specialist treatment, the expertise available at Sydney Dental Hospital is exceptional, often representing the highest level of care available within NSW's public health system.
Sydney Dental Hospital is strategically located at 2 Chalmers Street in Surry Hills, NSW 2010, directly opposite the entrance to Central Railway Station. This prominent Surry Hills location makes the hospital highly accessible via public transport from throughout Sydney. Patients can easily reach Sydney Dental Hospital via train on the Central, Inner West, South Coast, or Illawarra Lines. Bus services in Surry Hills also provide convenient access. The neighbourhood surrounding Sydney Dental Hospital in Surry Hills is vibrant and well-serviced, with shops, restaurants, and other amenities nearby. For those driving, parking is available in the surrounding Surry Hills area, though public transport is recommended given the excellent train access directly opposite the hospital. The central Sydney location makes Sydney Dental Hospital equally convenient for patients from the CBD, inner-west suburbs, eastern suburbs, and outer regions travelling for specialist dental care.

Absolutely terrible experience today (27 July) at Sydney Dental Hospital Level 6 Special Care. โYou get what you paid forโ and since its free service so obviously you cant expect any better than a one star ! Too bad Google doesnt allow negative rating !! Staff were too busy chit-chatting about patientsโ personal circumstances and eating when serving patients (excuse me ladies?! Have you learnt about patient confidentiality at work???) Especially the mid-age receptionist with short blonde and curly hair (wears glasses when on computer she also doesnt wear a badge so I cant see her name - and she was the only one without a badge). She was also terribly rude and the way she talked back at me was absolutely arrogant. Management at Sydney Dental should pay more attention, check the survelliance camera and see if my review is the truth ! What a horrible customer service I have experienced today !!!

I am not someone who like writing a review, I am the "no comment" type of person.. So yeah it is the second time I am writing a review in my 32yr old life :). The receptionist (the blond young lady) was nice to me, but other receptionist was quite rude and ignorant to another patient, the way she talked was very inpatient, I feel bad for the patient. About the young dentist, there are many dentist (professional and students), some of them are nice and some of them.. How to say it.. Rude if I can say.. I was waiting for 40mins so yeah while waiting and doing nothing I observe and saw the way they treat others. Not all the dentists are bad, some of them are really nice, but the young ones are quite arrogant, but that's normal.. Because maybe they think they are very smart and soon will be a dentist, so like a bird just learned and able to fly, they are quite arrogant, but I believe once they become a professional dentist and own the business, I am sure they will change to be a better person otherwise they won't have a patient and how can they earn money then.. Finally they call me.. And another young dentist quite arrogant as well like another young student dentists..the way they speak, the young student dentists need to learn a manner unfortunately.. The helper was Asian young lady and very rude to me, they way she spoke to me was like talking with a 6yr old boy who is very naughty and never listen. I feel sad actually. But ooh that's okay. My Christian believe taught me to love one another and to forgive and forgive and forgive. I know that it is a free service, but it would be great if they can improve the customer service. It doesn't have to be perfect. Maybe if they have a nice tone and a little bit nice manner, it would be super great.. Maybe because it is free, the patients seem like a beggar. Even with a beggar, I always treat them with respect, I never throw a note or gold coins at them, I gave it to them nicely with food as well. So that's my review. I personally, I just checked but since It is with root canal and Nerf, I will do it in my country since it is cheaper there because I think I will have to wait for a month for my next appointment. The young dentist who checked my teeth was quite good I think, she is confident and seems know well what she is doing but I decided to do the treatment At my country when I visit my family member next month. Thank you. If you don't like my reviews, that's okay, no debate please :)

I had a tooth pulled by student that never needled area properly ,was agony , the professor was giving a final exam I tried to take pain so student would pass after ten minutes her trying to rip it out , she chipped both teeth around it and , the professor came over and pulled in two seconds flat . I've had some great work here but found the needles given by students very hard to handle . pay if minor a private dentist , major work can cost up to twenty thousand dollars that's when you must take the pain and go here , dentures etc its great as good as most expensive place money can buy , hope this helps you out ... Lousy, no respect for the patients, the people who pay these PUBLIC SERVANTS with tax and costs. I let them know I would be a little late, which they agreed to. When I arrived 12mins late I was told I would have to reschedule my appointment until another day... meaning another tedious time to get there by public transport in my wheelchair! I pay taxes, making them answerable to me as their indirect employer! Go to a private bulk billing dentist, not here! ๐ฌ
