Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka is Croatia's leading tertiary teaching hospital in Rijeka, housing a Clinic for Dental Medicine with over 3,400 staff across 27 medical specialties.

Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka (Klinicki bolnicki centar Rijeka, KBC Rijeka) is the principal tertiary healthcare institution of the Kvarner Bay region of Croatia, situated in the city of Rijeka. As both a major hospital and a teaching hospital, KBC Rijeka serves as the clinical and scientific research base for the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Health Studies, and the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Rijeka. The hospital operates across 46 buildings covering approximately 206,000 square metres of total floor space, with a capacity of 1,069 inpatient beds and 24 operating theatres. Among its clinical divisions is a dedicated Clinic for Dental Medicine, which provides specialist-level oral healthcare to patients from across the Kvarner and wider Adriatic region.

The hospital employs more than 3,400 staff members, including approximately 500 doctors covering 27 medical specialties, over 1,200 nursing staff, and a broad range of allied health professionals including pharmacists, physiotherapists, laboratory technicians, psychologists, and speech therapists. This scale and multidisciplinary character makes the Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka uniquely positioned to manage complex medical and dental cases that require coordination across multiple specialties.

The Clinic for Dental Medicine at Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka offers a comprehensive range of specialist dental services delivered by academically trained clinicians. As a teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Dental Medicine, the dental clinic combines education, research, and clinical care. Key dental services available at the hospital include:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery — complex extractions, jaw surgery, pathology management, and reconstructive procedures
  • Implantology — dental implant placement supported by hospital-grade surgical facilities
  • Prosthetics and Prosthodontics — crowns, bridges, dentures, and complex prosthetic rehabilitation
  • Orthodontics — specialist orthodontic assessment and treatment for children and adults
  • Endodontics — root canal treatment and management of dental pulp disease
  • Periodontics — treatment of gum disease and supporting dental structures
  • Paediatric Dentistry — dental care for children, including preventive and restorative treatment

Patient Experience

As one of the largest hospitals in Croatia, Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka manages a high volume of patients across all specialties. The dental clinic within the hospital is staffed by specialists and supervised residents, reflecting its dual role as a clinical training environment and a patient care facility. While the hospital environment differs from smaller private clinics in terms of atmosphere and waiting times, it offers unmatched access to specialist expertise and hospital-level support. Referrals from general practitioners and other dental clinics in the Rijeka region are a primary source of patients for complex cases.

Location & Accessibility

Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka operates from primary sites at Kresimirova 42 and T. Strizica 3 in Rijeka, Croatia. The hospital is centrally located within Rijeka, Croatia's largest Adriatic port city and the capital of the Primorsko-Goranska County. Rijeka is accessible by motorway from Zagreb, from Trieste, Italy (approximately 67 kilometres), and from Ljubljana, Slovenia. Rijeka Airport, located approximately 34 kilometres from the city centre, provides connections to European destinations. Public transport links within Rijeka provide access to the hospital sites from the city centre and surrounding municipalities.

Shame. I end up in the ER only to be turned away by the doctor while I'm shaking in pain and crying and given pills that overdosed me without any instructions for my weight or condition. Also the second time I was there they didn't feed me or give me proper food for my fresh wounds and I had hallucinations of hunger without pain pills and nausea all night long while the nurses were nowhere to be found.

I want to write a review because I think it's the least I can do to thank the wonderful staff. I gave birth on 02.01. First of all, I would like to praise Sister Elvira and another sister from the department who worked with Sister Elvira (blonde hair) whose name I unfortunately don't know, beautiful and warm women who truly listen and answer all questions until the birth, doing everything to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Next, I would like to praise Dr. Finderle, who is the greatest professional and expert in his job and very pleasant and helpful, as well as the two young doctors who were in the department those days, also whose names I unfortunately don't know. And special thanks go to the best midwife Olja. Everything was better with her, thank you to heaven for everything, it's clear that she does what she loves! 🥰 also thanks and praise to the male midwife! And the last straw, a young nurse with black curly hair from Babinjača who delighted me with her positivity, smile, care, help, patience. It's clear that you do what you love! Thank you very much to everyone at the gynecology department!

Emergency at night: This hospital is absolutely not clean, the employees are VERY kind and nice, but the whole building is dirty, not anonymous, broken and not hygienic. Please avoid this hospital as a tourist, this was awful - the employees are very GOOD! but the instruments, buildings and people OMG - I haven't seen something like this. In Austria, something like this, doesn't exist. For us this is something that in good places in 3rd world countries maybe exist. I am very sorry for the lokals - but this emergency part, this is a shame, for all of us. Thank to all the employees, you were so nice and helped me a lot - but your situation, this must change! For the employees and clients - this is a human's right to have a clean and good working hospital and workplace!

The employees at the laboratory in Rijeka don't know what their colleagues in Sušak are doing, so they won't take your blood (IRA) at 32 weeks pregnant, but they walk you around like it's the door across the street. In order to come to Sušak and have it drawn, they tell me that they could have drawn it in Rijeka as well. Of course, my doctor told me that I could in Rijeka and Sušak, so I'd see where it was more convenient for me, I didn't go by heart, just so that no one would walk me around. There's a study in Sušak where samples are collected, and it's voluntary, not mandatory, so if you find yourself in this situation, you know how to react. Unfortunately, I found out after the walk, the lady would have heard me if I had been informed. Good luck!

I arrived at 3:30 a.m. by ambulance and received immediate, competent, and successful help from the ENT specialist. He calmly and professionally treated my uncontrollable nosebleed, i.e., cauterized it! (Not a pleasant experience!) Then I was allowed to rest for another two hours until my dear friends picked me up! The staff in the emergency room were, as expected for the time of day, quite irritable, but still acceptably friendly. I was relieved! June 29, 2025. In their own way, they were still nice.

I was on the second floor above the emergency room, hospitalized for 10 days for pancreatitis in the diabetic ward. If we ignore the ward itself, which has no hot water and is in a dilapidated state, the nurses, doctors and all the other staff were more than kind, attentive, and when you are in a condition where you can barely go to the toilet, your conversation and work make you feel like a human being...well done. My experience was more than good....

Unfortunately, KBC Rijeka Hospital was a huge disappointment. Communication between departments was chaotic, and the doctors' diagnoses were often contradictory. There was a lack of clear information for relatives, and the organization of appointments with doctors left much to be desired. The appointments were limited to a short time window from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., with relatives often not being admitted until around 2:45 p.m. This meant that there was hardly any time left for each person to ask important questions. Overall, the organization gave a chaotic impression, and the coordination between departments as well as the communication with relatives urgently need improvement. Such conduct is completely unacceptable for a hospital of this size.

Thanks to all the wonderful and GREAT people from the gynecology-oncology department at Sušak. In my very difficult days after the surgery and accepting the diagnosis, thanks to the entire team of people who selflessly dedicated themselves to me, pulled me out of the depths, restored my optimism and faith, and I am ready for new fights and victories!
